Stargate Officially Replaces SG-1 With A New Team Timekeepers

Stargate SG-1 remains one of science fiction's most enduring cult favorites, with a fiercely dedicated fanbase that continues to reminisce on the series' ten seasons and more than 200 episodes. Expanding on the mythology introduced in the original Stargate film, the series turned the concept of interplanetary travel through ancient portals into a sprawling universe filled with alien civilizations and artifacts as well as unique and fascinating long-running character arcs.

Much of the show's appeal came from the SG-1 team itself, particularly the chemistry between Jack O’Neill, Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson, and Teal'c. Their mix of humor, loyalty, and genuine camaraderie helped distinguish the series from more self-serious sci-fi dramas of the era. Although Stargate has never quite carried the mainstream cultural footprint of Star Trek or Star Wars, SG-1 developed an unusually loyal audience that still celebrates the series decades later.

And while hardcore fans will remember the change distinctly, most casual Stargate viewers likely never noticed that the SG-1 team was completely replaced in one of the franchise's long-awaited sequels.

Stargate SG-1 Officially Replaces Its Most Iconic Team

Stargate made one of the franchise's biggest changes by effectively replacing SG-1 with an entirely new team of heroes in Timekeepers, the 2024 real-time tactics game from Slitherine Ltd. The game is explicitly set within the SG-1 era, picking up around the end of season 7 and beginning during the Battle of Antarctica, and it also constitutes the most recent official release for the Stargate franchise.

SG-1 is still active in the story, with Commander Eva McCain and her unit initially supporting the iconic team against Anubis, but they are no longer the characters audiences actually follow. Instead, Timekeepers hands the spotlight to McCain and a new group of specialists as they embark on an original campaign involving the Jaffa Resistance, Moloc's forces, and the Unas. McCain fills the leadership role, while sniper Max Bolton, technical expert Sam Watson, drone specialist Derreck Harper, Jaffa rebel A'ta, and Unas warrior Xugga provide a completely different ensemble for players to control.

Timekeepers is a particularly unusual Stargate SG-1 continuation, and while Jack O’Neill, Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson, and Teal'c remain important to the setting, the game deliberately moves them aside and builds its 14-mission story around characters created specifically for this adventure. In practical terms, SG-1's universe continues while SG-1 itself is replaced as the franchise's central playable team.

Stargate Has Struggled To Relaunch Since Timekeepers Released

Unfortunately, Stargate: Timekeepers was not the start of a larger franchise revival that fans have been hoping for. Since the game first arrived on PC in January 2024, Stargate has continued struggling to establish a consistent stream of new releases in both the gaming and television/film space. Timekeepers eventually completed its 14-mission campaign with Part 2 in October 2024, and console versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S were announced in December 2025, but there still hasn't been another major original Stargate game to follow it.

The situation on television has been even more frustrating. Amazon MGM Studios appeared ready to finally bring Stargate back to live action when it officially greenlit a new Prime Video series in November 2025. Veteran Stargate writer Martin Gero was attached as show-runner, with Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi also involved, seemingly giving the franchise its strongest chance at a proper comeback in years.

Sadly, in June 2026, Amazon MGM decided not to move forward with the project. The cancellation left Stargate without a new television series once again, meaning Timekeepers remains one of the franchise's most recent official narrative releases, even if it is in video game format. For a property with such a devoted audience and decades of established mythology, Stargate's proper revitalization will hopefully only be a matter of time.
