Danantara to discuss Japan train import plan with transport minister

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund Danantara will discuss with Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi on Friday a proposal to import used train sets from Japan for electric commuter rail services.

"I am scheduled to meet with the transportation minister today. We should discuss the matter with the minister," Danantara Chief Operating Officer Dony Oskaria said in Jakarta.

Oskaria declined to say whether Danantara would support state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia's proposal, saying any decision should follow a thorough assessment.

"We must look at the costs and benefits and assess what value the initiative would generate for us," Oskaria said, adding that he would first discuss it with Purwagandhi.

He also highlighted domestic manufacturing capacity, saying the government remains open to sourcing rolling stock from state-owned trainmaker PT INKA.

"We could align demand with INKA's production capacity," he said.

KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin secured approval from House of Representatives Commission VI for the import plan during a hearing.

He proposed importing 23 used train sets from Japan to help meet rising demand for electric commuter rail services in Jakarta and surrounding areas.

The proposal comprises seven 12-car train sets and 16 eight-car train sets from Japan.
