Rupiah gains to Rp17,887 as Indonesia's forex reserves stay strong

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian rupiah strengthened by 12 points, or 0.07 percent, to Rp17,887 per US dollar on Wednesday, supported by Indonesia's continued strong foreign exchange reserves.
Analyst at the Indonesian Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (ICDX) Muhammad Amru Syifa said Indonesia's foreign exchange reserves stood at US$146.3 billion at the end of September, slightly down from US$146.5 billion at the end of August.
"The reserves covered 5.3 months of imports or 5.2 months of imports and the government's external debt servicing, exceeding the international adequacy benchmark of about three months," he told ANTARA.
According to Syifa, the rupiah's positive performance on Wednesday was supported by Indonesia's stable external position and a weakening US dollar amid expectations of a dovish stance from the US Federal Reserve (Fed).
However, he said the rupiah's gains could be limited as the market awaits the minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting and further developments from the Fed.
"The market is awaiting the Fed's minutes to gauge the direction of interest rate policy," he said.
He added that the US dollar index (DXY) and global sentiment would remain key factors influencing the rupiah's performance in the short term.
Bank Indonesia's Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (JISDOR) also strengthened on Wednesday to Rp17,880 per US dollar from Rp17,910 previously.
