Ryan Reynolds and Nicolas Cage are coming back to Netflix.
The two iconic actors have rarely worked together, though Reynolds hoped Cage would reprise his role as Ghost Rider in Deadpool & Wolverine (he did not), which features many past iterations of Marvel superheroes. In addition to being known for Ghost Rider, Face/Off, Moonstruck, The Rock, and National Treasure, Cage has appeared in the notable 2024 horror hit Longlegs and 2026 superhero series Spider-Noir.
Reynolds, meanwhile, is most famous now for the Deadpool movies. Both actors also have some voice-acting experience, with Cage's filmography including Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Reynolds' turn as the titular character in the otherwise live-action Detective Pikachu. But the actors worked together on an animated hit that still may have sequels in the future.
Cage & Reynolds' The Croods Is Taking Its Adventure To Netflix
Reynolds and Cage's 2013 animated prehistoric fantasy adventure movie The Croods will drop on Netflix on November 1. From DreamWorks, The Croods follows a family led by overly cautious patriarch Grug (Cage), who is challenged when his daughter Eep (Emma Stone) comes across adventurous outsider Guy (Reynolds). The Croods' cast also includes Catherine Keener and Chris Sanders (also the director).
The Croods currently has a 71% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $587.3 million worldwide on a budget of $135 million (per Box Office Mojo). It was followed by another theatrically released sequel in 2020, The Croods: A New Age (currently available to stream on Peacock), which grossed $215.9 million, doubtlessly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Leslie Mann, Peter Dinklage, and Kelly Marie Tran joined the cast for the sequel. The Croods is also, ironically, coming to Netflix just as another prehistoric-themed animated franchise is taking over the streaming service. While Ice Age has been a big recent hit on Netflix in part because of all the movies releasing at the same time, The Croods could get caught up in this trend, with a similar theme and appeal.
What Does The Future Hold For The Franchise?
The Croods was previously a Netflix hit when it was available on the platform in 2025. Therefore, it is likely that it will see another resurgence in the next few weeks, which could be the reassurance producers need to revisit the franchise. DreamWorks has already produced the spinoff series The Croods: Family Tree (2021-2023) following the first movie sequel, and may feel there is still mileage left in this IP.
At this time, DreamWorks has made no official announcement about a third Croods movie, though fan speculation has circled online. Given DreamWorks' interest in continuing its other successful IPs — with Shrek 5 coming and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 coming next year — it is not implausible that the studio will return to The Croods.
The Croods 2 also achieved a Rotten Tomatoes score of 76%, signaling that the franchise retained its relative good quality after a seven-year hiatus. If The Croods 3 happens, it would be coming at least seven or eight years after the last movie. Hopefully, it would not be a disappointing revival for fans.
The Croods will be available to stream on Netflix from November 1, 2026.
