Indonesia ready to address forest fire control efforts at COP31

Jakarta (ANTARA) - People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Deputy Speaker Eddy Soeparno said Indonesia is ready to outline its efforts to tackle forest and land fires if the issue comes under scrutiny at the 31st UN Climate Change Conference (COP31) in Turkiye.
"We appreciate the support from the general public. We also appreciate the support extended by our friendly neighboring countries. However, we are making every effort to extinguish forest and land fires and prevent them from occurring in the future," Soeparno said during a media briefing in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The briefing was organized by the Government Communication Agency (Bakom) to outline Indonesia's preparations ahead of the delegation's departure for COP31.
Soeparno said Indonesia has undertaken various firefighting measures to tackle forest and land fires, which have been significantly influenced by the El Niño climate phenomenon.
He noted that during COP31 preparatory discussions, Deputy Forestry Minister Rohmat Marzuki explained that forest fires are not exclusive to Indonesia, pointing to similar occurrences in Australia and the Republic of the Congo.
"To ensure that information about our efforts is presented on an equal footing with those of other countries, we are doing our utmost to control forest fires, as other countries are also doing, even though the fires in some countries may be more extensive than those in ours," Soeparno said.
In addition to firefighting efforts, Indonesia will accelerate reforestation in various regions to help offset emissions generated by forest and land fires.
Soeparno emphasized that Indonesia is seeking to implement technology and innovation to prevent fires, alongside strict law enforcement and stakeholder collaboration.
