A homicide investigation is underway after a woman was found stabbed to death at a parking area in McLean, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C., authorities said.

A man was heading out for a run around 7 a.m. Monday when he spotted a woman lying unconscious next to her car, Fairfax County Police Capt. Jason Chandler told reporters. The car was at a parking area that leads to several trails in the Great Falls area, Chandler said.

The woman suffered "trauma to her upper body" and was pronounced dead at the scene, Chandler said.

Asked about any suspects, Chandler told reporters that "detectives are actively following up on leads," adding, "there's no immediate indication that this was a random act."
