NWSL: Gotham FC claims No. 1 with first NWSL Shield
It's Monday, and with the final matchday of the 2026 NWSL regular season in the books, it's time for ESPN's Power Rankings.
1. NJ/NY Gotham FC
Previous ranking: 2
Next match: vs. Seattle Reign, Sunday, 12:30 p.m. ET (stream live on ESPN)
NJ/NY Gotham FC added yet more hardware to their trophy cabinet with a 2-0 win at home over Utah sealing their first NWSL Shield in club history. Midge Purce had an outstanding two-assist performance, providing Jaedyn Shaw with her club-leading 11th goal in her 100th NWSL appearance. Shaw and Rose Lavelle both returned from injury layoffs. The win also included the club's NWSL-best 14th clean sheet of the season.
Gotham FC are defending NWSL champions after sneaking into the postseason last year by grabbing the final playoff place. They now cap off 2026 at the top of the table after occupying the position for 12 straight weeks.
2. Angel City FC
Previous ranking: 1
Next match: at Kansas City Current, Saturday, 12 p.m. ET
Angel City are just the second team in NWSL history to enter the postseason on a 10-match unbeaten run, and they showed no signs of slowing down in a second half offensive explosion against Boston. Their 4-1 win brings them level with Kansas City for the most goals on the year (54). Rookie Taylor Suarez now has six goal contributions in her last seven games.
Angel City may not have a home playoff berth, but that may suit them. They have lost just twice on the road since May.
3. San Diego Wave FC
Previous ranking: 4
Next match: vs. Utah Royals, Friday, 10 p.m. ET
The Wave missed out on winning their second-ever NWSL Shield despite a 1-0 win over Bay FC on Decision Day. Mimi Van Zanten's well-placed ninth-minute effort was enough for the Wave to dispatch Bay FC. Teenager Kimmi Ascanio and Melanie Barcenas nearly combined for a would-be second goal in the second half. The Wave will take a club record seven-game unbeaten run into the postseason.
4. Kansas City Current
Previous ranking: 3
Next match: vs. Angel City, Saturday, 12 p.m. ET
The Kansas City Current will be hoping their forward momentum continues into the playoffs after finishing the regular season having lost just one of their last 10 games. Their confident 2-0 win away at Racing Louisville locked up the final home quarterfinal spot. Kansas City commands a 32-match home regular season unbeaten streak; that, however, excludes their shock first round home playoff loss as the No. 1 seed last year.
5. Washington Spirit
Previous ranking: 5
Next match: vs. Portland Thorns, Sunday, 3 p.m. ET (stream live on ESPN)
The Washington Spirit claimed a gritty 2-0 win at home to Chicago to clinch a home quarterfinal for the third successive year. Trinity Rodman scored the insurance goal and admitted postmatch it was "not the best performance at all" for her team. However, Washington got the job done, despite losing star defensive midfielder Hal Hershfelt to a season-ending ACL injury midweek.

6. Portland Thorns
Previous ranking: 6
Next match: at Washington Spirit, Sunday, 3 p.m. ET (stream live on ESPN)
The Portland Thorns failed to clinch a home playoff berth, but secured the sixth overall spot in the table. Sophia Wilson scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Houston. She netted a re-taken penalty kick in the 70th minute and is now a perfect 10-for-10 in penalty kicks on her NWSL career. It caps a great year for Wilson: she concluded the 2026 regular season third in the Golden Boot race on 15 goals, her most in a single season.
7. Seattle Reign FC
Previous ranking: 8
Next match: at NJ/NY Gotham, Sunday, 12:30 p.m. ET (stream live on ESPN)
Jordyn Bugg officially booked Seattle's place in the playoffs with her dramatic left-footed finish off a corner kick in the 68th minute. The young center back's goal sealed the Reign's 1-0 victory over Orlando at home in front of the third largest crowd (16,095) in Reign history. Seattle's decisive victory sees them qualify for their ninth postseason; the second most in NWSL history behind rivals Portland.
8. Utah Royals
Previous ranking: 7
Next match: at San Diego Wave, Friday, 10 p.m. ET
The Utah Royals had previously clinched their first ever playoff spot, but fell 2-0 away at NJ/NY Gotham FC. They have now failed to score in their last three games and have gone 305 minutes without a goal. The continued absence of leading goalscorer Mina Tanaka due to a hamstring injury is a problem as Utah enters the postseason. Miyabi Moriya came close to ending the goal drought with a smartly taken shot in the first half.
9. North Carolina Courage
Previous ranking: 11
Next match: N/A
The Courage got their goal at the death courtesy of an own goal from former player Kaleigh Kurtz in a 1-0 win over Denver. However, it was all academic as Seattle won their game to officially eliminate North Carolina from postseason contention. Ashley Sanchez is the 2026 Golden Boot leader and ties Temwa Chawinga for the most goals scored in a single season (20); she nearly had the record-breaking goal, too, before it was called back for offside. The Golden Boot winner had only missed the playoffs once before this season (Sam Kerr for Sky Blue FC in 2017).
10. Denver Summit FC
Previous ranking: 9
Next match: N/A
The expansion side's playoff hopes remained afloat until the very final day of the season, only for a 1-0 defeat off an own goal -- combined with Seattle's win -- to knock Denver out of the playoff picture. Nick Cushing's side failed to score for the first time in nine games against North Carolina. Inconsistent form down the stretch (W-L-W-L-W-L in their last six) arguably cost Denver a playoff appearance. However, the foundation appears strong for the future.
11. Boston Legacy FC
Previous ranking: 10
Next match: N/A
The curtain closes on the Boston Legacy's expansion season with a 4-1 loss at Angel City FC. They managed just two shots on target, though Amanda Gutierres netted her team-leading 11th goal of the year. The Legacy overcame a nightmarish start to their NWSL journey (five straight losses) and ended the year taking a respectable 13 points from a possible 24.

12. Houston Dash
Previous ranking: 12
Next match: N/A
Houston saw its playoff hopes dashed two weeks ago and formally concluded their 2026 season with a 2-0 defeat at home to Portland. The club can walk away from the year with a glimmer of hope for the future. The Dash's rookie class (Kat Rader, Leah Klenke and Linda Ullmark) delivered in a big way. Goalkeeper Jane Campbell also made a league-leading 131 saves this season. She saved an initial penalty kick from Wilson, before it was called back for encroachment from a defender and successfully re-taken.
13. Orlando Pride
Previous ranking: 13
Next match: N/A
The Orlando Pride's disappointing 2026 campaign came to a close with a 1-0 loss away at Seattle in the game that clinched a playoff berth for their opponents. The Pride failed to register a shot on target. Orlando were already eliminated from playoff contention. The dismissal of former Shield and Championship-winning coach Seb Hinds in September did not produce a new manager bounce as the Pride finished in their worst table position in club history (11th).
14. Bay FC
Previous ranking: 14
Next match: N/A
Bay FC put up a more robust performance at home to San Diego, but failed to find the back of the net. Keira Barry had perhaps Bay FC's best chance of the game with her punchy effort from distance in the second half. Bay FC, though, conceded first and have failed to win any of their last 38 matches when giving up the first goal dating back to their expansion season. It has been a letdown of a season for Emma Coates' side as they finished one table position lower than last season (14).
15. Racing Louisville FC
Previous ranking: 16
Next match N/A
Racing Louisville's depressing 2026 comes to a merciful close with a 2-0 loss at home to Kansas City. Racing has failed to win a game since August 19. What does the future hold for this team and the players? Star winger Emma Sears asked to be traded this past summer, coach Bev Yanez is on the final year of her contract, and relocation rumors persist.
16. Chicago Stars FC
Previous ranking: 15
Next match: N/A
Chicago made life difficult away at Washington before falling to a 2-0 defeat. The Stars garnered just 17 points across the NWSL's longest ever season; a dubious new record for the club. The team also scored the fewest goals this year (17) while conceding the most (71). New chief soccer officer Vlatko Andonovski has his work cut out for him in terms of restoring the club to its former glory days.
