Fire erupts along Bangkok MRT line, forcing shutdown and delays

BANGKOK, Sept 20 — Bangkok’s MRT services were disrupted this afternoon after a fire broke out on railway tracks near Tao Poon station in the city’s Bang Sue district.

The Bangkok Post reported that the fire was detected at about 12.20pm on the elevated railway tracks along Pracharat Sai 2 Road, prompting an initial suspension of services across all stations.

Fire and rescue personnel who arrived at the scene reportedly found an electrical short circuit involving cables on the railway line, with flames still visible as they worked to bring the situation under control.

Bangkok Expressway and Metro (BEM) said that staff and relevant agencies were inspecting the affected area, with the safety of passengers and staff given priority.

“We fully understand that this incident is affecting the travel plans of many passengers, and BEM is taking every possible measure to resume services as quickly and safely as possible,” it was quoted as saying.

In an update at 1.13pm, BEM reportedly said services between Bang Pho and Kamphaeng Phet stations would remain closed because of a disruption to the power supply.

Passengers were also reportedly advised to use nearby MRT stations, with delays of up to 60 minutes expected.
