Hasan Mahmud created history on Sunday as he became the first-ever pacer from Bangladesh to pick a hat-trick in Test cricket.

Mahmud, the 26-year-old right-arm fast bowler, achieved the feat during the third day of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi.

Bowling the 83rd over in the first innings of Afghanistan, Mahmud first went through the defence of Ismat Alam. With his next delivery, he had new batter Qais Ahmad caught behind by wicketkeeper Litton Das.

On the penultimate ball of the over, he struck Zia-ur-Rehman on the pads and appealed for LBW. However, the decision did not go in his favour after which Bangladesh took a DRS review. Hawk-eye technology showed that the ball was crashing into off-stump which forced the on-field umpire to change his verdict.

Overall, Mahmud is the third Bangladeshi bowler after spinners Alok Kapali (against Pakistan in Peshawar in 2003) and Sohag Gazi (against New Zealand in Chittagong in 2013) to claim a hat-trick in Tests.

Mahmud finished with the figures of five for 55 as Bangladesh dismisses Afghanistan on 240 to take a 106-run first-innings lead.
