Blade Runner Is Officially Switching Genres In 2027 In Upcoming Gaming Release

Known as 'Cyberpunk 2077's' biggest fan, Angharad is a Welsh games writer who thrives in anything related to digital storytelling. If a video game explores the intricacies and horrors of womanhood, she is there.

Thanks to previous work at GAMINGbible, GameByte, The Loadout, Game Luster, Angharad has built a strong understanding of both the digital world and what fans want from it and is eager to share her thoughts and expertise with readers.

Beginning its life with Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by author Philip K. Dick before being adapted into a hit movie by Ridley Scott back in 1982, Blade Runner swiftly became something of a cultural phenomenon, drawing attention to the cyberpunk genre, and going on to inspire the sci-fi, dystopian genre as a whole.

Since then, Blade Runner 2049 hit cinemas in 2017, and with an upcoming television miniseries, Blade Runner 2099, expected to continue the series well into the 2020s, there is something about this franchise that keeps fans coming back, even with the news that it is about to experience quite the genre switch.

There is no denying that Blade Runner went on to inspire the likes of hit dystopian RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, and other upcoming titles such as Nivalis Nights, but that is hardly surprising considering the hypnotic world that was born from the idea. With neon-soaked streets, towering advertisements, body modification, and advancements in technology, it is a future that seems impossibly close and yet so far and now, fans can experience just a taste of what it may feel like.

The Blade Runner: The Immersive Experience is exactly what it says on the tin, allowing fans of the franchise to immerse themselves in a multisensory experience inspired by the dystopian world. As the official synopsis reads:

Watch the Blade Runner universe come to life through a multisensory exploration blending dystopian environments with deep storytelling. This Quebec-based project combines Behaviour Interactive’s video game expertise with PHI Studio’s immersive scenic mastery to faithfully bring the cult classic’s cyber-punk aesthetic to life.

Set to be released some time in 2027 in North America as part of a co-production by Behaviour Interactive and PHI Studio and in collaboration with Alcon Entertainment, Blade Runner: The Immersive Experience is an "odyssey into the heart of cyber-punk". Allowing the visitor to become a part of the environment, the project aims to explore "the contrasts between humanity and technology", complete with appropriate visuals and sounds to match.

By combining Behaviour Interactive's gaming prowess with PHI Studio’s technological mastery, the teams have been able to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience that not only revolutionizes virtual reality, but also breathes new life into the Blade Runner franchise as a whole.

It was over on r/bladerunner that news of this interactive experience broke, and fans of the franchise were quick to share their thoughts, with one comment reading, "All the talk of VR and AR is a bit of a bummer, but still hoping for the best. There were rumors of in-person activations, but I was thinking of something more physical and immersive, more like a Halloween Horror Nights house than just going somewhere to strap Blade Runner: Revelations onto my face. Would be very cool to, say, visit a Blade Runner-themed cyberpunk bar with a budget, or a back-alley black market with a live theater component."

As mentioned, Blade Runner: The Immersive Experience does not yet have an official release, but it is expected to hit North America some time next year, so, if you are eligible, you will not want to miss this unique take on the Blade Runner universe.
