Titus Glover urges Ga chiefs to defend traders affected by La Pleasure Beach demolition

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Titus Glover, has urged traditional authorities in the Greater Accra Region to intervene in the demolition of traders’ stalls at La Pleasure Beach, saying their silence on issues affecting their communities is worrying.

He believes chiefs must defend their people's interests, especially when government decisions or actions threaten their livelihoods. He has therefore urged Ga traditional leaders to engage President John Dramani Mahama and his appointees to seek answers over the exercise.

National Security operatives carried out the demolitions on Friday, October 2, 2026, following a request from Labadi Beach Hotel, owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

Mr Glover argued that traditional leaders in other parts of the country would not remain silent over similar developments. He cited the Ashanti Region, where he said authorities would engage the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, before implementing decisions affecting communities.

“The chiefs in Greater Accra must not be mute. They shouldn’t be wearing clothes and attending government functions and all that,” he said.

He added that young people wanted to see their traditional leaders actively defending their interests rather than remaining on the sidelines when their livelihoods were threatened.

“This is the time that we, the youth, want to see our chiefs speaking and defending us. They must speak to defend their people. You can’t do this in Ashanti Region. At least, you engage the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, [and explain] the reason why you want to do that,” he said.

Mr Glover also expressed concern about what he described as the lack of a strong response from Ga traditional authorities, contrasting their silence with the level of engagement he believes exists between traditional leaders and authorities in other regions.

“But we the Gas, look at how they are treating us,” he said, urging the chiefs to take a more visible role in matters affecting their communities.

He made the appeal in an interview with Sammie Wiafe on Citi FM on Thursday, October 29, insisting that traditional leaders must speak out when their people's welfare is at stake.

“So I am really cautioning and appealing that they need to sit up and stand up. At least, when they speak, it goes far,” he added.
