Sugiono calls wiretapping of Prabowo an act of insubordination

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Gerindra Party Secretary-General Sugiono, who also serves as Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, said wiretapping President Prabowo Subianto by an institution under his authority constituted insubordination.
“The wiretapping was carried out against the head of government, in this case the President, by an institution under his authority. In my own view, this is a form of insubordination,” Sugiono said at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Insubordination refers to a subordinate disobeying or defying a superior or acting beyond their authority.
In this case, it concerns alleged wiretapping by individuals within the National Police (Polri), which operates under the President's authority. He also suggested that the motive behind the incident could involve an act of treason against the President.
Sugiono said the alleged wiretapping originated within the government itself, making the incident an act of insubordination.
“Why would an institution under the President wiretap the President? That is insubordination,” he said.
Sugiono said Gerindra was questioning the motive and legal basis for the wiretapping. He noted that the law requires wiretapping to follow specific procedures and obtain a court order, ruling out arbitrary surveillance.
“Therefore, its intent must also be questioned. Why was the President himself wiretapped?” he said.
Sugiono further said he could not yet determine whether the wiretapping was politically motivated.
However, he said the allegation that the President was targeted was sufficient to raise questions about the case's motives and direction.
He praised National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo and his staff for handling the case, adding that his party respected the ongoing legal process.
Regarding those responsible for the alleged wiretapping, Sugiono said the investigation was still underway and expressed confidence that further findings and evidence would emerge.
“Let us just wait,” he said.
Sugiono regretted that the incident had occurred while the government was pursuing its development agenda.
President Prabowo's programs aimed to transform Indonesia into an independent, advanced, sovereign, just and prosperous nation, he said, adding that the case would inform policy evaluations, particularly on cybersecurity.
He stressed that applicable laws require wiretapping to have legal grounds and follow an established investigative process.
“We will review it, evaluate it, and monitor it,” he said.
