Painting could become standard disaster recovery therapy: Minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Muhaimin Iskandar stated that painting could become a standard psychological recovery therapy for disaster victims and a core part of disaster management curricula, alongside physical building repairs.

"Painting can become the standard for the psychological recovery of children in disaster-affected areas. This could become a model and a mandatory budget item for the government to provide space for artistic expression as a therapy in disaster handling," Iskandar said here on Tuesday.

He said painting could serve as a natural outlet for expression, especially for children who are victims of natural disasters.

He noted that paintings produced through this recovery program would tell a much more meaningful story, since they stem from experiences that cannot be replaced even by technology.

In addition, paintings could generate economic added value for affected communities through appreciation such as exhibitions and auctions held by communities or art collectors.

He also said post-disaster recovery programs involving painting would give rise to new artists who could enrich Indonesia's creative talent pool.

"This extraordinary added value will benefit appreciation efforts, especially for emerging artistic potential, which can grow while also gaining economic value from the creative economy," he said.

He also praised the program run by the Creative Economy Ministry to provide space for children who are disaster victims in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra to produce paintings as part of the Rekon Rehab recovery program.

Iskandar said creative economy players must be given space to build their capacity and develop economic potential, both from art and other creative products, that can revive regional economies, especially in disaster-affected areas.

"One example we will continue to develop, especially in Aceh, is reviving Aceh's coffee, which has gone global and become our national pride. We will continue to carry out environmental and economic recovery," he added.
