New Pokémon x Hatsune Miku Music Video Returns to Games' Roots
Pokémon feat. Hatsune Miku ProjectVOLTAGE, the collaboration project between massively popular video game series Pokémon and Vocaloid idol Hatsune Miku, debuted a new music video celebrating the games' 30th anniversary on Friday. Titled “1996,” the music video follows two children during their first encounter with the Pokémon game series in that pivotal year. (That's 11 years before Miku's own debut.)
The video features several first-generation Pokémon, a Super Nintendo/Famicom game console with the Super Game Boy add-on playing the original Pokémon Red/Green (Red/Blue in the United States) games, and a regular Game Boy playing the games.
Stream and downloads for the song will begin on Saturday at 12:00 a.m. Japan Time (Friday at 11:00 a.m. EDT).
Japanese musician and songwriter Ryo of the band supercell took care of the song's lyrics, composition, and arrangement, and also provided the story concept for the music video with Machigerita. Shunsuke Takarai directed the music video at Studio Hare and also handled the character designs, storyboards, and technical direction. Akiko Saitō served as the color key artist with Lee jooyuong directing the art. BLUE RIGHTS produced the music video with Makoto Kimura serving as producer.
Another Pokémon feat. Hatsune Miku ProjectVOLTAGE music video for the new song “Legends” appeared on ryo's own YouTube channel on Thursday. The video has Miku and several Pokémon performing the song in a studio. Stream and downloads for the song began on Friday at 12:00 a.m. Japan Time (Thursday at 11:00 a.m. EDT).
Pokémon feat. Hatsune Miku ProjectVOLTAGE began as a music collaboration in September 2023. The collaboration expanded in January 2026 for a line of merchandise items.
