Magnitude 4.8 quake hits eastern Japan

TOKYO: An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 struck eastern Japan early Thursday, with shaking felt in Chiba Prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
Kyodo News reported that the 4.13am quake originated in the northeastern part of the prefecture at a depth of about 50 kilometres, registering 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale in Asahi.
The tremor was also felt in neighbouring prefectures, including Ibaraki.
About three hours later, a quake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.0 jolted Ibaraki Prefecture, logging 3 on the seismic intensity scale in Hitachiomiya.
