September 2026 SASSA grants: Vigilantes, queue syndicates and more

Beneficiaries of September 2026 SASSA grants should make themselves aware of the following five things affecting stipends. Firstly, we’ll run through the payment dates as a reminder to all:
1. SEPTEMBER 2026 SASSA GRANTS PAYMENT DATES
As The South African reported earlier this month, September 2026 SASSA grants will be disbursed as follows:
- Old-Age Grants pay on Wednesday 2 September 2026.
- Disability and War Veterans Grants pay the following day on Thursday 3 September 2026.
- Children’s Grants, in the form of Child Support, Foster Child and Care Dependency all pay on Friday 4 September 2026.
2. DEFERRED PAYMENTS MOVED BACK A WEEK

Then there’s the fourth payment date for deferments. Next month it falls on Monday 7 September 2026. South African Social Security Agency CEO Temba Matlou has called on clients ‘not to panic’ if they receive notification of review. This date is reserved for September 2026 SASSA grants under review and/or eLife Certification. If your name lands on this list, you will not get paid with everyone else in your category. You get paid on the fourth day instead, once you’ve reported to a SASSA office and all is rectified.
3. SASSA QUEUE SYNDICATES
SASSA says it is aware of and cracking down on a queuing syndicate exploiting grant beneficiaries. The syndicate charges vulnerable applicants for early queue spots. Paying beneficiaries then jump ahead of others waiting for SASSA services. Social Development Minister Dina Pule uncovered the scheme during an unannounced visit to Pretoria Central.
4. PROMISES OF SHORTER WAIT TIMES

At the same time, Minister Dina Pule pledges shorter queues for September 2026 SASSA grants, after numerous complaints. She has ordered that more than 1 000 contract workers be recruited nationwide to solve the issue. Government has allocated R40 million for the appointments this financial year.
5. VIGILANTE GROUPS
Finally, GroundUp reports of vigilante groups stripping KwaThema pensioners of income. Joseph Phakathi (69) lost R2 300 in rental income. Vigilante mobs forced his Mozambican tenants out before a 30 June illegal immigrant deadline. His long-time SASSA Old-Age Grant is now his only income. Likewise, Gogo Nomasonto (71) faced the same threat. She lost R2 500 in monthly rental income and must now support seven grandchildren on a R2 400 SASSA grant alone.
