Practical Magic 2 X Reviews Out: Sandra Bullock & Nicole Kidman’s Return Gets Mixed Reactions — ‘The Magic Just Isn’t There

Practical Magic 2 is releasing worldwide today, but its early reviews on X went viral ahead of its release. The first film was a box-office flop but developed a cult following over the years, paving the way for this sequel. The film is expected to finally dethrone Spider-Man: Brand New Day from #1 in the domestic rankings this weekend. But ahead of that, let’s take a look at what the critics online are saying about this Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock starrer fantasy film.
Susanne Bier directed it, and the OG movie came out in 1998. Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Dianne Wiest, and Stockard Channing reprise their roles from the first movie, with a dynamic new supporting cast including Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, and Xolo Maridueña.
Practical Magic 2 X reviews out
The early reviews for Practical Magic 2 is all over the internet and it is quite mixed. A Nicole Kidman fan who is also a critic, Adam Patla wrote, “Much like its predecessor, #PracticalMagic2 is messy fun. Kidman and Bullock don’t miss a beat jumping back into the Owens sisters’ shoes (Kidman in particular is having a blast). Lee Pace is born to be a romantic leads. Lacking in depth for the new generation of characters and some story elements, as well as the visual dynamism of the original. I did find it to be emotionally satisfying, though!”

“#PracticalMagic2 is nothing short of brilliant. While many may argue there was no reason for a sequel, this film completely changes that perspective and immerses you once again in a world full of mystery and magic with the dazzling Nicole Kidman & Sandra Bullock reprising their roles as the two beloved sisters we came to know in the first film and the great addition of Joey King as Kylie, a character beautifully written and integral to the plot. This film takes the journey on a whole new level, and the Olivia Rodrigo ‘The Cure’ cameo had the entire theater crying,” adds Ryan.

Tired tropes and weak plot choices aside, the film excels with electrifying sister-energy from Bullock & Kidman and some brilliantly uplifting moments of togetherness. pic.twitter.com/cTuAap0M91
Film critic EJ Moreno said, “#PracticalMagic2 elevates the heart and soul of the original film, bringing the sisterhood movie we need right now! There’s such a real good energy to it that makes it such a heartwarming, earnest good time. Nicole Kidman is truly a godsend though! Magic MVP!”

“#Practicalmagic2 It’s almost impossible to find a cast that can return after 30 years to give us a sequel just as fun as the original. Remenicent of a solid 90s romcoms with a darker twist. For any film resurrected after so long, there will be plot holes, but still worth a watch!” added another critic named Cam.

Rotten Tomatoes certified critic Doug Jamieson said, “#PracticalMagic2 is longer than it needs to be and the plot is a bit muddled, but the effortless chemistry of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman makes it worth your while. Joey King is a solid addition and Lee Pace brings smouldering charm. A warm and nostalgic good time.”

Pop culture enthusiast Anthony Jenkins added, “While it’s wonderful to see Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman back in their iconic witchy roles, #PracticalMagic2 is a dull and lukewarm legacy sequel that lacks the wicked charm of the ’90s cult classic. With an unfocused story, recycled elements from its predecessor and underdeveloped characters, this nearly 30-years-later sequel is unfortunately dead weight. It may have had good intentions, but unfortunately, the magic just isn’t there.”

Critic Matt Rodgers added, “#PracticalMagic2 is as all over the apothecary as the first film, but it does have bundles of heart, especially during the opening gambit. However, it descends into a bloated Fantastic Beasts style romp that is waaaaaaay too long. Kidman is a hoot, though.”

@deetsdootz If you are a fan of the original, you will be a fan of #PracticalMagic2. Bullock and Kidman reignite the spellbinding magic that has been dominant for 27 years. Packed to the brim with romance, midnight margaritas and the sisterly bickering that we missed so dearly.”
Senior editor at EW said, “A lot of yammering about a meandering plot in #PracticalMagic2 or feelings that the movie is too long, but I gotta tell you — I don’t care! I just want to live in that world again. Ive waited DECADES — they could make margs and cast fun spells for 4 hours and I’m still SEATED.”
