Joey King: ‘Nothing more powerful’ than when girls come together

Practical Magic 2 star Joey King has said there is “nothing more powerful” than when girls come together.

The actress, 27, also known for the Kissing Booth franchise and The Act, stars in the sequel alongside Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman and Maisie Williams.

The film follows a family of witches who were cursed with a spell that meant any romantic partner they fell in love with would die a horrible death.

Sally Owens (Bullock) embarks on a wild adventure with her sister Gillian Owens (Kidman) to save her daughter Kylie (King) while she attempts to break the spell.

At the heart of the film, however, is the power of sisterhood, a message that is emphasised as being a bond stronger than magic itself.

Speaking to the Press Association, King said: “I think that when girls come together and are so supportive of one another and celebrate each other, there’s nothing more powerful and happy.

“There’s nothing that boosts your confidence more when your girls are casting you up if you’re feeling down.”

She said she was “so lucky” to have two sisters who have taught her “so much about love”.

King added: “When you get the opportunity to be part of a story of sisterhood and of women lifting each other up, I just find that to be so attractive, something that I really want to be part of and I hope to be part of more of that in the future.”

Her co-star Williams, 29, echoed these feelings, especially the value of learning from different generations of women.

Williams, who plays Sally’s daughter, doctor Antonia Owens, shared a number of “really special” scenes with Stockard Channing, who reprised her role as Aunt Frances.

She said:  “What I love about this film is the intergenerational passing of knowledge and wisdom and lessons learned and ways that we’re similar and the ways that we hate each other

“I have a close relationship with my mum and my auntie and I loved that part of this. Getting to explore the dynamic between these generations and what we can learn from each other was really special, and I was so excited to pick that on screen.”

She also praised Bullock, who was a producer on the show, describing her as “admirable”.

Williams said: “As a producer, there is nothing that will pass her. She has attention on everything. She’s watching everything. She’s on set every day, even when she’s not acting.

“I think that attention to detail is so admirable, but also she’s got such amazing taste because everything is so beautiful.”

King added that she felt “so lucky to be part” of the Practical Magic universe and learn from Bullock and Kidman, who helped craft the film, and honour what the fans wanted.

The film has had mixed reviews, receiving an average three stars from The Guardian and two stars from The Telegraph, the FT and the Independent.
