Luka Doncic got a technical foul with 1:12 left in the second quarter of Monday's game against the Miami Heat in Los Angeles. The Lakers guard called it a clap, nothing more. The call also gave Miami a free throw before halftime. The Lakers won 138-117, so the result never changed. The Slovenian's wallet was another matter. On Tuesday, the NBA looked at the play again and made a ruling, which the league office posted on social media. The outcome takes one small worry off a strong start for the 27-year-old.
What Did The NBA Decide About Luka Doncic's Technical Foul?
The NBA rescinded it. The league announced the decision Tuesday after a retroactive review by the league office. For Luka Doncic, the ruling takes the call off his regular-season technical foul total and cancels a $2,000 fine.
The league's post was short. It named the 1:12 mark of the second quarter in the Nov. 2 game against Miami and said the call was rescinded.
Doncic clapped at referee Jacyn Goble (No. 68) after a no-call, and Goble answered with a technical. The Lakers star was visibly unhappy and questioned the officials, insisting the clap was all it was. Doncic already had 24 points by then.
The Lakers won by 21, and Doncic finished the night with 42 points, 13 assists, seven rebounds and two steals on 14-of-24 shooting at Crypto.com Arena. The technical stood on the books overnight.
How Many Technical Fouls Does Doncic Have This Season?
One. A technical against the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 30 is the only one on the board.
The goal was public early. “This season, I'm not trying to get techs,” Doncic said on Oct. 21, per ESPN's Anthony Slater.
Past seasons explain the urgency. Doncic piled up 13 technicals in only 50 games in 2024-25, then 16 in 2025-26, second most among all players. Sixteen brings an automatic one-game suspension, and the Lakers guard served one last season after reaching it. The Lakers would like to avoid a repeat.
With the record in mind, a quick whistle is easier to understand. The league office still did not let it stand.
One technical through seven appearances leaves plenty of room under the cutoff, though the season is young.
Doncic leads the league at 38.3 points per game, has scored at least 37 in five straight and has topped 40 in four of seven games. The six-time All-Star adds 8.1 assists, 8.0 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 49.7 percent from the field and 42.7 percent from three.
Los Angeles, led by Doncic and Austin Reaves since LeBron James left in free agency this summer, is 6-2 and holds the No. 4 spot in the West. Next up is Wednesday against the Sacramento Kings, with a chance at a third straight win.
