Walton Goggins is one of the stars of the adventure movie that tried to reboot a major franchise on the big screen, and it has now found a second life on streaming as one of the biggest movies in the world at the perfect time. Goggins' career has heated up in recent years. That is when Goggins' list of movies and TV shows started to see some major additions. On the small screen, Goggins is one of the leads of a sci-fi TV show sensation, Prime Video's Fallout, where he plays the Ghoul. Goggins has also become a superhero fan-favorite.
The actor voices the key character Cecil Stedman in Prime Video's global hit animated superhero series Invincible. On HBO, Goggins was one of the leads of the dark comedy series The White Lotus, having a memorable storyline with a tragic twist in season 3 of the HBO anthology series alongside actors like Sam Rockwell and Aimee Lou Wood. Ahead of what is shaping up to be a packed schedule of movies and shows for the actor in 2027 and beyond, Goggins is now seeing his Tomb Raider movie find success on streaming internationally, outside the United States, and it comes at the right time.
Goggins' Tomb Raider Has Been Unearthed As A Netflix Hit
Goggins' Tomb Raider movie, which starred Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, has become the 6th most-watched movie on Netflix worldwide, according to data from FlixPatrol. There have been multiple Tomb Raider adaptations in live-action and animation, with Netflix itself recently releasing a two-season animated series, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which had Avengers: Doomsday star Hayley Atwell as the voice of Lara Croft. That said, Goggins and Vikander's movie was originally released in theaters on March 16, 2018. Based on a reported budget of $90 million (via The Numbers), Tomb Raider needed between $180 million and $225 million to break even.
Tomb Raider is not available on Netflix in the United States, where it is streaming on HBO Max, according to JustWatch.
Goggins' action adventure movie ended up succeeding in that task, as Vikander's take on Lara Croft found the treasure map to $275 million at the global box office. At the time of writing, Tomb Raider has left behind movies like the Netflix Original crime thriller Unabomber, the Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney R-rated rom-com Anyone but You, and the animated Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs on Netflix's global charts. Leading the list as Netflix's most-watched movie worldwide is Ben Affleck's Animals, a new original thriller. According to FlixPatrol, 2018's Tomb Raider is trending on Netflix in 30 countries.
The Action Remake's Return Comes At The Perfect Time
Tomb Raider's newfound streaming success on Netflix internationally comes at the perfect time for two reasons. It will allow new viewers to understand the core premise of the franchise as it gets ready to start a new chapter. After all, Prime Video has a new Tomb Raider series on the way with Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner as Lara Croft. The upcoming show will feature Goggins' The White Lotus co-star Jason Isaacs. As for the actor, Goggins is joining a major movie in the form of 2028's Miami Vice '85, with set photos recently emerging. Tomb Raider's success increases the hype for those releases.
