Stop-work order issued after fatal Paya Terubong landslide, five houses told to evacuate

GEORGE TOWN: A stop-work order has been issued following a landslide in Taman Seri Rambai, Paya Terubong, with occupants of five houses advised to evacuate as a precaution.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the affected project involves the construction of a road and apartments, which has been ongoing for more than a year.

He said the Land Office will coordinate arrangements for residents who need to be relocated.

"For now, a stop-work order has been issued against the development project near the landslide site.

"Also, we have advised the other residents to leave. The Land Office will handle the arrangements," he said when met at the scene.

Asked whether MBPP had been monitoring ground movement behind the affected area, Rajendran said the project's consultants would be responsible for conducting the necessary assessments.

He declined to comment further, saying investigations would be carried out to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Earlier today, a man was killed after a landslide struck the rear of his house in Taman Seri Rambai.
