Heat director Michael Mann was briefly hospitalized Saturday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Halloween, where police and medical responded to The Range LA following calls concerning the shooting, TMZ first reported.

“On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann,” a rep for the director told Rolling Stone. “He was treated and is being released.”

A source close to Mann said the incident occurred while the director, an experienced target shooter for decades, was taking target practice at the licensed gun range. Though a medical team responded to the shooting, the injury was considered minor and subcutaneous.

The 83-year-old Mann, who has also helmed films like Manhunter, The Insider, and Ali, should have a few months to recover before embarking on his next project: The star-studded, long-awaited prequel/sequel to his crime epic Heat.

Heat 2 — reportedly starring Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Driver, Stephen Graham, and many more — is set to finally begin filming in January 2027, Graham recently told Today; the film, adapted from a book Mann himself co-wrote, had originally planned to start shooting earlier this year.
