Three yet-to-be-identified homeless men have been shot dead while sleeping at the Post Office Bus Stop on Adeola Odeku Street in the Victoria Island area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident occurred on Sunday.

It was gathered that the victims were among about 10 destitute persons sleeping at the bus stop when two men on power bikes arrived at the spot and attacked them.

A police source in the community told our correspondent on Monday on condition of anonymity that the incident was reported by a concerned citizen on Sunday morning, prompting an anti-crime patrol team to visit the scene.

“We received a report that three men were found lying lifeless at the Post Office bus stop. Our men were dispatched to the scene, and the officers found the three men lying in pools of blood. We started preliminary enquiries with residents and members of the public,” the police source disclosed.

Another source in the community, who was privy to the incident, told our correspondent that the killing was confirmed to have been carried out by two assailants following a review of closed-circuit television footage of the incident.

According to the source, who works close to where the incident happened, the footage showed two riders on power bikes, each carrying a white box, parking across the road before crossing to the bus stop where the homeless people were sleeping.

“The footage showed the assailants checking the faces of those at the bus stop before speaking with the victims and shooting them. They also inflicted machete wounds on different parts of their bodies.

“One of the victims pleaded with the assailants not to kill him and asked that they settle their differences amicably, but he was eventually shot dead,” the source added.

PUNCH Metro further gathered that the three victims were new faces in the area, having recently joined others who regularly slept at the bus stop.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident.

She said, “The bodies were evacuated and deposited at the Lagos State Government’s Mainland Hospital, Yaba, for autopsy. Preliminary investigations were ongoing to trace the assailants and identify the victims’ families.”
