Flamingos beat Ghana 4-2 to maintain winning start at WAFU B

Nigeria’s Flamingos maintained their winning start to the 2026 WAFU B U-17 Girls’ Cup with a 4-2 victory over Ghana in a keenly contested Jollof Derby on Friday.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi put Nigeria ahead in the 33rd minute before captain Harmony Chidi doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time.

Ghana reduced the deficit through captain Seidatu Wahab in the 62nd minute, but Nigeria restored their two-goal cushion eight minutes later through Mary Dunstan.

Kaosarat Akanji added a fourth for the Flamingos in the 87th minute before Gloria Ameaa scored Ghana’s second in the 90th minute.

Nigeria had to play the final half-hour with 10 players after Elizabeth Adesuyi was sent off in the 59th minute.

Despite being a player down, the Flamingos held firm to secure another important victory and strengthen their position in the competition.

The result comes three days after Nigeria opened their campaign with a 5-0 demolition of Niger Republic. Captain Chidi opened the scoring in that match before Awawu Bashiru doubled the lead, while Ohunene Sunday, Dunstan and Ayomide Rotimi completed the rout late in the game.

The victory over Ghana means the Flamingos have now scored nine goals in their opening two matches, continuing their impressive attacking form in Côte d’Ivoire.

The regional tournament is also serving as part of Nigeria’s preparations for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. Head coach Akeem Busari had said the competition would help his players identify their strengths and weaknesses before the global tournament.

The 2026 WAFU B U-17 Girls’ Cup was switched to a league format following Benin Republic’s withdrawal, with Nigeria, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Togo, Niger and hosts Côte d’Ivoire taking part.

The Flamingos will now turn their attention to their remaining fixtures as they continue their pursuit of regional honours and preparations for the World Cup.
