Did Jeff Hafley’s Bold Fourth-Down Call Change Everything For The Miami Dolphins?

Jeff Hafley spent five Sundays searching for a win as the Miami Dolphins head coach. He found it in his home state. With two minutes left at MetLife Stadium, Miami led the New York Jets by three and faced fourth and one from the Jets' 49. Hafley skipped the punt. Quarterback Malik Willis kept the ball, gained two yards, and the Dolphins held on for a 28-25 victory. It was Hafley's first win as an NFL head coach, and the first game all year in which Miami held a lead. Here is how it unfolded.

Jeff Hafley Asked His Linemen What They Wanted To Do

Most coaches would have talked it over with an assistant. Hafley walked up to the big guys instead. A miss would have given New York the ball near midfield with a chance to tie, so the stakes were plain to everyone.

"I grabbed the o-line, looked them on, asked what they thought, what they wanted to do," Hafley said. "When I saw the look in their eye, I was very confident that we would get it. As soon as I saw that, there was no doubt in my mind I would go for it. I trusted them. I've talked about the toughness of this team. Once we made the decision, I knew we would get it."

The line backed up the talk. The interior pushed forward, DJ Herman and Ollie Gordon added shoves, and Willis fell across the marker. Game over, basically.

Malik Willis And Caleb Douglas Lift The Dolphins, But Hafley Sees Fixes

Willis finished with 208 passing yards and two touchdowns, and he ran for another score. Rookie receiver Caleb Douglas caught both touchdown throws, including a 63-yard bomb in the fourth quarter. For a team that had trailed in every game, that kind of balance felt new.

Miami's defense made one big stop at the goal line late. It also gave up open looks in man coverage, and Hafley was quick to say so.

"There is a lot to correct. But it's nice to do it with a win."

The result also carried weight for him personally. Hafley grew up in New Jersey, and about 30 family members and friends came to watch.

"To think about, as a kid coming into this stadium, I have a lot of memories.... a lot of memories with my dad. Thinking of me as a little kid in the parking lot as we [drove in today], I was one of the those guys flipping off the buses, and now here I am. Somehow it worked out with now I'm coaching here."

The Dolphins stand at 1-5 and host no illusions. But the New England Patriots arrive next Sunday in a divisional game, and Miami now has a model for how it wants to play.
