God Of War 6 Officially Confirmed

Thanks to the success of 2018's God of War reboot and its sequel, God of War Ragnarök, the Santa Monica franchise has had something of a resurgence over the past decade. With this being many fans' introduction to the franchise, it is easy to forget that the very first God of War was launched way back in 2005, followed by two further installments.

Now, with the news that fans can expect a remake of the original trilogy, as well as a live-action movie, and spin-off title God of War Laufey, there has never been a better time to be a fan, but when it comes to a potential God of War 6, information is a little less clear.

Has God of War 6 Finally Been Confirmed?

After years of speculation, it was during 2026's San Diego Comic Con that God of War 6 was finally confirmed by Sony Santa Monica Head of Creative, Cory Barlog. Set to continue Kratos and Atreus' story after the events of God of War Ragnarök, the next installment will mark the third entry in the reboot series, but perhaps most exciting is the news that our favorite Spartan warrior will return as the main protagonist.

Speaking on a panel about all things God of War Laufey, Barlog was asked about God of War 6, to which he replied, "Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next. Phranque has been around since the beginning. It’s interesting to see how to build this world out. Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing.”

Of course, Barlog does not outright claim that "what comes next" will be God of War 6 specifically, but we can safely say that there will be another game in at least some capacity.

A Mixture of Mythologies

Barlog also mentioning Phranque, the gelatinous cube we have all seen from God of War Laufey's official art, could hint at both Faye and Kratos' stories becoming even more entwined in the future.

We already know that the story of Laufey will see Faye in the afterlife of the gods, and it is here that she meets deities from multiple different mythologies, including Sekmet from Egyptian mythology and Begtse, the god of war in Tibetan folklore.

Until now, Kratos has battled the Greek gods in the original trilogy, before the reboot series took him to Ancient Scandinavia to meet the Norse gods of old. As such, it would only make sense for this trend to continue in the third installment of the reboot trilogy.

For now, information remains scarce on God of War 6, and with God of War Laufey to be released first, it will be many years away from launch. Nevertheless, knowing that it is on the horizon is good enough for me.
