Surin to welcome Asian Games sprint star Puripol with nine elephants

SURIN — 10 October 2026, Surin is preparing a grand homecoming for Thai sprinter Puripol Boonson, who won two gold medals at the Asian Games, with a procession of nine elephants planned to welcome him back to his hometown.

Puripol is scheduled to arrive in Surin at 17:00 on 19 October. The province has arranged for nine elephants to lead a procession from Mueang Surin District Office along Lak Mueang Road, passing the police station before turning right near the local education office and heading toward Suan Mai, where an official welcoming ceremony will be held.

Puripol won gold in both the men’s 100 metres and 200 metres, breaking the Asian Games records in both events.

His time of 19.88 seconds in the 200 metres also made him a joint holder of the Asian continental record alongside Chinese sprinter Xie Zhenye.

The homecoming celebration is intended to honour the athlete’s achievements and welcome one of Thailand’s leading track-and-field stars back to his home province.
