Mike Flanagan’s 3-Season Plan For Stephen King’s Carrie Series Revealed

Mike Flanagan's plans for the Carrie adaptation have been revealed.

A new take on the seminal Stephen King novel, Carrie represents Flanagan's first television series since he made the jump to Prime Video from Netflix, where he created seminal series such as The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass. It's a fitting opening salvo since, arguably more than any other streamer, Prime Video has made a point of leaning in and establishing a roster of young adult hits.

Carrie, though, is a little different than The Summer I Turned Pretty and Off Campus. It famously follows the titular Carrie White (played by Summer H. Howell), an apparent teenage outcast who snaps once she's pushed too hard by her classmates. Carrie is set to premiere on October 7, consisting of eight episodes, and there's already an eye on where the King adaptation could go next.

In an interview with Collider at the Toronto International Film Festival, Flanagan was asked about his ideal length for how long the Carrie series should last. In his response, which is included below, the Haunting of Hill House creator explains why three seasons is his “dream scenario” and likens the Prime Video Original to a trilogy:

In my dream scenario, I think it’s three seasons. In my dream scenario, I think Carrie has a wonderful three-step arc. It’s a trilogy, really.

The cast of Carrie includes Samantha Sloyan, a frequent Flanagan actor, in the role of Margaret White, with Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder, and Matthew Lillard also starring as series regulars. The project is described as a reimagining of the classic King story, as Carrie deals with her overbearing mother, Margaret, as well as the challenges of high school and the emergence of her telekinetic powers.

There are some big and other more subtle changes to this particular take on Carrie, including how Margaret is initially presented and how Carrie's dad casts a shadow on the story. It is perhaps needed, considering that the supernatural horror was already made into an unforgettable Brian De Palma movie, which saw Sissy Spacek in the starring role.

It is also welcome given Carrie's long road to a modern television series. It was previously in the works at NBC, then FX, before ultimately finding its path to Prime Video and a new generation of horror fans that might not have read the Stephen King book or seen its most memorable screen translation. In that way, Flanagan's planned trilogy could be a fresh start.

Carrie premieres October 7 on Prime Video.
