India Star Reveals Gautam Gambhir's Clear Message Despite Series Win: "That's The Goal"

India spinner Varun Chakaravarthy said head coach Gautam Gambhir has urged the team to approach every match with a winning mindset, adding that the side is determined to win the remaining two T20Is against New Zealand despite already securing the five-match series. India head into the fourth T20I at Eden Park in Auckland after registering convincing victories in the first three matches, with their batters dominating the series. The visitors will now look to extend their winning run and take an unassailable 4-0 lead. Speaking ahead of the fourth T20I, Chakaravarthy said Gambhir had made it clear that India should target a clean sweep.
"The first thing GG told us was that it's a five-match series and we should look to win every match. So that's the goal. And the next two matches we'll treat as a two-match series. We need to win both games," he said.
Reflecting on India's batting display in the previous match, where they chased down 199 with 40 balls to spare thanks to Abhishek Sharma's blistering 113 off 38 balls, Chakaravarthy admitted it would be difficult to better that performance but hoped the batters could produce something similar again.
"I don't think you can top that, but I hope they can repeat it today. They are used to playing on such pitches and at smaller venues, so that certainly played into our advantage," he said.
Chakaravarthy, who is yet to feature in the series, also spoke about the intense competition for places within the Indian squad, stressing the importance of continually improving to remain in contention.
He said the depth of talent in Indian cricket leaves no room for complacency.
"Playing for India, the best thing that can happen is being in contention for selection. You need to keep pushing yourself because there is so much talent coming through. You can't just go back home and relax. You have to keep improving and performing," he said.
