East Java's Ijen Crater to reopen to tourists following wildfires

Banyuwangi, East Java (ANTARA) - Ijen Crater Nature Park, internationally renowned for its highly acidic crater lake and rare “blue fire” phenomenon, will reopen to tourists on Monday (September 28) after being closed for several weeks due to land and forest fires.

The East Java Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) temporarily closed the park, which straddles Bondowoso and Banyuwangi districts, on September 4 to facilitate emergency firefighting operations.

“According to a circular issued by the East Java BKSDA, tourist visits will resume on September 28, including nature tourism, hiking, research, and general education activities,” Head of Ijen Crater Nature Park Rusdi Santoso told ANTARA on Saturday.

With the fires fully extinguished and hiking trails having undergone a thorough post-disaster safety assessment, the park is now ready to welcome visitors again.

Santoso said reopening the park is important not only for nature enthusiasts but also for reviving the local economy, which relies heavily on tourism generated by the volcanic crater.

Tickets have been available for online booking since Friday (September 25) through the Forestry Ministry’s official website, https://ayoketamannasional.kehutanan.go.id.

However, park authorities stressed that visitors must strictly follow safety regulations. Hikers are required to bring essential equipment, including flashlights, warm clothing, and protective masks, which are strongly recommended for safe travel around the park.

“We also urge visitors to maintain cleanliness, refrain from littering, and avoid any actions that could trigger another fire. Most importantly, do not light campfires,” Santoso warned.
