$25,000 Cape Cod cottage became one of America’s most iconic homes

Homes are often more than just four walls and a roof. They hold memories and tales of the lives lived inside them and are privy to some of the highest and lowest moments of them. One such home is a $25000 beach cottage in Cape Cod that has seen and withstood some of the best and worst moments of American history.The Kennedy Compound is as famous as the family who owns it. Located in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, the property, which is made up of three houses set along the beach of Cape Cod has been the site of numerous moments of American political dynasty. It was where John F. Kennedy brought Jackie after proposing marriage, it functioned as a "summer white house," and it was here that the president's mother Rose, heard of her son's assassination.

The fated house

According to the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Port Museum, the origins of the Kennedy Compound on Cape Cod can be traced back to 1926. That summer, Kennedy family patriarch Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. rented Malcolm Cottage in Hyannis Port for his family. He had previously tried to find a summer home in Cohasset, a coastal town about an hour from Hyannis Port. However, he was turned down by the exclusive Cohasset Golf Club, allegedly because he was Irish Catholic as per a report by All Things Interesting.

When Kennedy Sr. learned that Hyannisport Club was more welcoming to Irish Catholics, he decided to give it a try.He liked the area immensely and purchased Malcolm Cottage two years later for $25,000. This is the house that soon became known as the Kennedy Compound. It became the summer destination for the Kennedy clan which at the time included Joseph, his wife Rose, and their children: Joseph Jr., John, Rosemary, Kathleen, Eunice, Patricia, Robert, Jean, and Edward.As an adult, John F. Kennedy bought his own home in Hyannis Port, just behind his father's house. So did his younger brother, Robert. These three oceanside properties, which total six acres, make up what's known today as the Kennedy Compound.

A history of lives well-lived

Located in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, the property is made up of three houses set along the beach of Cape Cod.

John F. Kennedy spent many happy days in Hyannis Port. As he geared up to run for president in 1960, the Kennedy Compound became the headquarters of his presidential campaign. He even watched the election results here after voting in Boston, and it was here that he celebrated his victory over Richard Nixon.

Though his presidency took JFK to Washington, D.C., he and his family still spent their summers at the Kennedy Compound, which came to be known as the "Summer White House.

""Hyannis Port became, during the summers, a major national and international dateline," the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Port Museum explains. "The massive and intensive press coverage — newspapers, TV and glossy magazine colour photos — of the wealthy, powerful and glamorous family at work and play in seaside settings focused national attention on Cape Cod."But on November 22, 1963, the Kennedy White House became tinged with news that would change the lives of the family forever. Rose Kennedy was at home when her son Robert, then the attorney general, called her to let her know that JFK had been shot in Dallas. Later, he called again to let her know that the President was dead. The assassination of John F. Kennedy marked the end of an era. But the Kennedy Compound remained an important meeting place for his family.

A generational home

The Kennedy family continued to spend time in Hyannis Port in the second half of the 20th century. In 1994, 30 years after the president's assassination, his son, John F. Kennedy Jr., brought his then-girlfriend, Carolyn Bessette, to the Kennedy Compound to meet his famous family. According to 'The Kennedy Heirs: John, Caroline, and the New Generation — A Legacy of Tragedy and Triumph' by J. Randy Taraborrelli, the meeting did not go well.

JFK Jr.'s aunt Ethel (the wife of Robert Kennedy, who had been assassinated in 1968) quizzed guests on current events. Ethel asked Carolyn about the federal assault weapons ban, and when Carolyn expressed ignorance, Ethel remarked: "You may want to read up on it."Though Bessette purportedly swore she would never return to the Kennedy Compound, she did. She and JFK Jr., then her husband, were flying to Hyannis Port to attend a family wedding when their plane crashed off the coast of Martha's Vineyard on July 16, 1999, killing the couple and Bessette's sister, Lauren.Indeed, Hyannis Port was often the site of sad events. Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. died there in 1969; so did his wife, Rose, in 1995, and their son, Ted Kennedy, in 2009. But the family has also celebrated many happy occasions at the Kennedy Compound, from the engagement of JFK and Jackie back in 1953 to the marriage of Robert and Ethel's granddaughter, Sarah Kennedy, in 2023.Now, roughly a century since the house was first bought, the Kennedy family still spends their summers at the home.

In recent years, the entire family has gathered to celebrate the Fourth of July together in Hyannis Port. In that way, the Kennedy Compound is still an important place. Not only is it special to the Kennedy family to this day, but the sweeping grounds of the compound, with its views of Nantucket Sound, are also imbued with history."Don't let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot, and it will never be that way again," said Jackie Kennedy famously to a Life reporter from the Kennedy Compound just four days after her husband's funeral and this house is just that.
