USA retain FIBA Women’s World Cup

The United States retained their Women’s Basketball World Cup title after defeating France 97-79 in the final on Sunday.

The Americans overcame a bright start from France, who put the defending champions under pressure in the opening exchanges before the United States gradually found their rhythm and took control of the contest.

Breanna Stewart led the way for the champions with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Jackie Young added 18 points. Kahleah Copper and Caitlin Clark contributed 15 and 12 points respectively.

For France, Dominique Malonga top-scored with 21 points, while Gabby Williams finished with 20.

The United States took greater control after the interval, with their superior rebounding and offensive efficiency allowing them to pull away from their European opponents.

France continued to battle but the Americans remained composed in the closing stages to secure another World Cup triumph.

The victory further underlined the United States’ dominance of women’s international basketball and saw them successfully defend the title they won at the previous edition.
