Spain coach set to sign new deal after World Cup victory – Reports

Spain’s World Cup-winning coach Luis de la Fuente is set to sign a new contract that will keep him in charge of the national team until the 2030 World Cup.

According to Reuters, De la Fuente has agreed to extend his contract after guiding Spain to back-to-back major international titles.

The 65-year-old led La Roja to Euro 2024 before completing a remarkable run by winning the 2026 World Cup in July. His current contract was due to run until 2028.

Since taking charge of the senior team in December 2022, De la Fuente has transformed his tenure into one of the most successful periods in Spain’s recent history.

He has overseen Spain’s 2023 UEFA Nations League triumph, Euro 2024 success and their second men’s World Cup title, making his continued presence at the helm a priority for the federation. Goal had previously reported that the Spanish Football Federation was preparing a lucrative extension to retain him through the 2030 tournament.

The new agreement would keep De la Fuente in charge when Spain defend their world title on home soil at the 2030 World Cup, which the country will co-host with Portugal and Morocco.

His record with the national team has also been remarkable. Spain have lost just twice in 41 competitive matches since he took charge.

De la Fuente’s extension comes after his future had remained open following Spain’s World Cup triumph. Immediately after the final, the coach said he was in no hurry to decide his future and wanted to enjoy the historic achievement.

Reuters said it had contacted the Royal Spanish Football Federation for comment on the new agreement.
