KUALA TERENGGANU: A 39-year-old mentally disabled woman was killed after she was struck by a car while lying in the middle of the road along Jalan Jambatan Sultan Mahmud early today.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said police were alerted to the incident at 2.15am.

Initial investigations revealed that the incident occurred at 1.15am when a Proton Waja driven by a 28-year-old man was heading towards Kuala Berang from Gong Badak.

"Upon reaching the location, the car struck the victim, Ainun Wahab, who was lying in the middle of the road.

"Due to the close distance, the driver was unable to swerve in time and crashed into the woman," he said.

Azli said Ainun died at the scene from severe injuries, and her body was sent to the Forensic Unit at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital for further action.

The driver was unhurt, and the vehicle sustained no damage.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
