Springbok team to face Wallabies in Perth went to these SCHOOLS

Rassie Erasmus has named a significantly changed Springbok team to face Australia in Perth on Sunday, 27 September with Andre Esterhuizen set to captain South Africa for the first time.

The versatile Esterhuizen will become the 68th player to captain the Springboks, while Jasper Wiese will earn his 50th Test cap when he comes off the replacements bench.

Erasmus has made 13 changes to the starting XV that defeated New Zealand 43-28 in Baltimore just over a week ago to clinch the inaugural Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry title.

Only lock Eben Etzebeth and wing Ethan Hooker retain their places in the starting line-up.

Andre Esterhuizen gets his chance

Esterhuizen has previously captained the Hollywoodbets Sharks and has become an important member of the Springbok squad.

Erasmus believes the 31-year-old has earned the opportunity through his contributions both on and off the field.

“He captained the Hollywoodbets Sharks, and he has brought so much to our squad off and on the field, both at centre and in the loose trio, and he thoroughly deserves this opportunity,” Erasmus said.

Erasmus also believes the appointment will further strengthen South Africa’s leadership group.

Erasmus warned that Australia will present a very different challenge to the All Blacks.

The Wallabies have won four of their last five matches, with their other result being a draw against Argentina. They also suffered a narrow defeat to Ireland and recorded a comprehensive victory over Italy.

“They are a proud nation and will certainly want to continue building momentum going into their next two clashes against the All Blacks and the second leg of the Nations Championship in November,” Erasmus said.

“They are going to throw everything at us. Adding to that, they have physical forwards and a very exciting backline, so it will take another big performance from us to get the result.”

The Test kicks off at 11:45 (SA time) and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
