WWE To Revive Sin Cara After 7 Years With New Face Behind The Famous Mask

WWE has reportedly talked about bringing back Sin Cara, the masked character who last appeared under the company's banner in 2019. As per PWInsider Elite, the idea is floated internally, but no confirmed return date or details on who might portray the character is announced. Sin Cara first came to WWE in 2011, with Mexican wrestling star Mistico in the role. Later the character passed to Hunico, who kept using the mask after Mistico left the company. So now the reported pitch puts the familiar name back on WWE's radar, but who the new Sin Cara could be is still unknown.

The Sin Cara character changed hands during its original WWE run

The original plan didn't stay with one wrestler for long. Mistico got suspended for 30 days under WWE's Talent Wellness Program, and because of this Hunico wore the mask. When Mistico came back, WWE made a feud out of the situation, Sin Cara Azul against Sin Cara Negro.

The rivalry reached a Mask vs. Mask match at a SmackDown taping in Mexico City on October 16, 2011. Sin Cara Azul won and kept his mask, while Hunico's version lost the contest.

WWE may give the mask to a different wrestler

Mistico left WWE in 2014 and Hunico carried on as Sin Cara. Later he teamed with Kalisto as the Lucha Dragons, and the group eventually grew into Lucha House Party along with Gran Metalik. Hunico got his WWE release in December 2019.

Besides, the new pitch could mean WWE wants some other wrestler to take over the identity, instead of bringing back either of the previous performers. PWInsider Elite's report calls the discussions “early pitches”, so nothing is confirmed as a plan that will reach television.

The name is what's being pitched here; the performer remains an open slot. The original report doesn't attach any name to the revival, and WWE hasn't explained how it would use the character if the idea moves forward.

A separate report from False Finish also named AAA wrestler Myzteziz Jr. as somebody who had been considered for the role, but nothing has been confirmed by WWE.

Then there is another possible route. Cinta de Oro, the wrestler who portrayed Sin Cara after Hunico, said in a September interview he would welcome another chance to play the character: “I would love to do that definitely again and give it another shot.”

For now it's only a reported idea. Stay tuned for more updates.
