The Mortal Kombat series is one of those rare sets of releases that really does feel timeless, regardless of when a new arrival comes along to join the party. So much so that it's now a true franchise in its own right, with various adaptations to mediums all across the spectrum, as people further crave more spines being removed from bodies.

Its iconic blend of hyper-violence and memorable characters continues to resonate with players across the board. Nowhere has that been better demonstrated by a brand-new Kickstarter project that has already smashed its funding goal, and promises to be a Mortal Kombat experience like no other for those who do decide to get involved.

Over on Kickstarter, you should be able to find the campaign page for Fight!: Mortal Kombat 1 - Deck-Building Game from Cryptozoic Entertainment. The fundraising round hasn't yet concluded, but it has already smashed past its goal of ~$60,000, currently standing at a spectacular total of over $220,000.

In letting fans know a little about what they can expect from the game, the manufacturer posted the following description on their campaign:

"Fight! Mortal Kombat 1 is the newest member of the Cerberus deck-building-game family. Play as your favorite MK1 Kombatants, choose your own playstyle, perform awesome KOMBOS, build powerful decks, and unleash devastating Fatalities!

"The game leverages our new Fight! Engine, which was designed from the ground up to be an incredible, dynamic two-player experience... and then optimized so more players could join the mayhem. Our innovative design allows players to pursue and adapt different exciting strategies on the fly, bringing all the tension of a Mortal Kombat fighting game to your tabletop.

  • Select your favorite Kombatant and build a strategy around their KOMBO ability!
  • Finish them! Play over-powered Fatalities whenever you defeat your opponent!
  • Clearly defined strategies with distinct play patterns
  • Countless opportunities to outsmart enemy Kombatants through deck construction and counterplay!
  • Quick and infinitely replayable, a 1v1 game can take 30 minutes or less"

In even better news, though it has already smashed past all of its goals, you can still get involved and back it yourself to get hold of a copy of the game. The full list of contents included as part of the standard offering for those who back with enough money to buy the game, includes:

  • 242 Standard Cards
  • 9 Kombatant Cards (Tarot-sized)
  • 4 Health Tracker Cards
  • 4 Health Markers
  • 18 Korpse Tokens
  • 1 Rulebook

There is also plenty of planned additional content that will release further down the road to keep the experience fresh, including three full expansions that bring extra characters and cards to wrangle. The game is currently aimed at 2–4 players, with each run taking around 30–45 minutes, depending on how many of you are involved.

It could also be a great way to fill time as a fan while we wait to hear more about the next Mortal Kombat game, which we know is currently in development after a teaser from Ed Boon essentially said as much.
