NTSA road safety operation: What will be checked at roadblocks

Translate

The government has launched a 24-hour operation that will see road safety checks deployed along major transport corridors, as it seeks to prevent loss of life amid recent deadly motor vehicle accidents.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) says the campaign will have a special focus on night safety.

"Night safety checks have been prioritised because evening and late-night hours are statistically the deadliest periods on our roads. By allocating additional resources during these high-risk hours, we can maximise efforts to disrupt the critical risk factors that cause preventable road traffic crashes," the agency said in a statement on Monday.

What officers will check

1. Speeding: Real-time monitoring of vehicle speeds to detect violations.
Speed limiters: Verification that speed limiters are working and continuously transmitting data to the Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS).

2. Driver documentation: Validity of driving licences and PSV badges.

3. Passenger Compliance: The Authority said many passengers ignore seatbelts, which keep occupants secure, prevent ejection and reduce fatal and serious injuries. It urged all passengers to buckle up throughout the journey.

4. Long-distance public transport: Documents including passenger manifests, driver logs to monitor driving hours, licensed route compliance, Road Service Licences, and the validity of inspection stickers.

5. Vehicle capacity: Compliance with authorised passenger capacity and permitted load weight limits.

6. Drink-driving: Breathalyser screening.

NTSA urged motorists to slow down when approaching designated checkpoints and cooperate fully with officers.
