Timothy Olyphant has only starred in a handful of horror movies throughout his career, and his rarest one is shifting streaming homes.
Though having a fairly broad range of genres under his belt, Olyphant is undeniably best known for his work in the world of Westerns, thanks in part to his breakout role in HBO's Deadwood and Emmy-nominated turn in Justified. However, he has dipped the occasional toe into all things horror, ranging from the villainous Mickey in Scream 2 to the adaptation of Stephen King's Dreamcatcher and one particularly underrated movie that is about to get a new streaming release.
A remake of George A. Romero's 1973 horror-thriller, Olyphant led the cast of The Crazies as David Dutten, a sheriff in the small town of Ogden Marsh, Iowa who is preparing for him and his wife to have their first child. However, when the town's residents begin acting erratically and violently, the pair must find a way to survive and escape the town before it's too late.
Also starring Silent Hill's Radha Mitchell, Hannibal's Joe Anderson and Arrowverse vet Danielle Panabaker, The Crazies found itself met with generally favorable reviews from critics, even surpassing that of Romero's original on Rotten Tomatoes with its 72% approval rating from critics. Moreover, the horror-thriller became a smash financial hit, grossing over $54 million against its $20 million production budget and an additional $16 million on home media.

Now, a little over 16 years after the film first hit theaters, The Crazies is making a change in streaming homes by heading to Peacock. Olyphant's horror-thriller remake will be premiering on the NBCUniversal streamer on October 1, joining numerous other genre titles, including the remake of Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left, Christian Bale's iconic American Psycho adaptation and Rob Zombie's Firefly trilogy, among many others.
In addition to coming to Peacock just in time for Halloween, The Crazies getting a new streaming home comes at a more pertinent moment as the film was about to lose a good majority of its streaming homes. Previously, Olyphant's remake had been available to stream on Fawesome, Tubi, The CW and Kanopy, all of which offered a free viewing alongside ads, but is set to leave the former two platforms beginning October 2.
Olyphant's The Crazies Is The Rare Horror Remake That Actually Works
After over 16 years, The Crazies remains a rare genre outing not just for Olyphant, but for horror as a whole. Development on the film began in the height of the horror remake boom in Hollywood, which included everything from the Michael Bay-produced Texas Chainsaw Massacre to Sony's Grudge franchise, only for various creative differences and studio changes seeing it pushed back to a 2010 arrival.
By the time the film did release, The Crazies found itself part of one of the most heavily saturated years for horror remakes. Also coming out in 2010 was that of the divisive I Spit On Your Grave update, Matt Reeves' Let Me In, Bay's widely-panned Nightmare on Elm Street remake, Alexandre Aja's Piranha 3D and Benicio Del Toro's The Wolfman.
Unlike most of its immediate and wider genre counterparts, however, The Crazies has frequently stood the test of time as one of the better-appreciated horror remakes. Where many have found themselves criticized for failing to recapture the tension of their originals, or only serving as dull rehashings of their source material, Olyphant's film instead garnered appreciation for keeping its pacing tight and finding a way to modernize its doomsday plot in intelligent directions.
Considering how big of a year Olyphant has had on streaming thanks to his Over Your Dead Body remake, and adaptations of Lucky and Five-Star Weekend, it does seem very likely that The Crazies could find itself enjoying yet another resurgence on streaming. The film's new streaming home also serves as a perfect way to tide over fans of the three-time Emmy nominee as they wait for his highly-anticipated Alien: Earth season 2 return, which is expected sometime in 2027.
