Indonesia, Norway launch fifth FOLU community fund phase

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian and Norwegian governments have launched the fifth phase of the Community Fund Service scheme under Indonesia's FOLU Net Sink 2030 agenda to support community-based forest conservation and environmental sustainability efforts.
The funding scheme supports Indonesia's goal to ensure that carbon sequestration from the Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) sector exceeds or balances the emissions generated by the sector by 2030. Norway supports the initiative through a results-based contribution mechanism.
Deputy Minister of Forestry Rohmat Marzuki said in a statement received here on Wednesday that Rp20 billion (around US$1.1 million) had been allocated for the fifth phase, with funding expected to benefit 300 community groups.
The fund will be distributed by the Ministry of Forestry through the Environmental Fund Management Agency, enabling communities to participate actively and inclusively in forest conservation efforts and climate resilience initiatives.
Marzuki explained that the funding would be distributed under three themes, including "FOLU Biodiversity" and "FOLU Goes to School," which focuses on biodiversity conservation and fostering student participation in sustainability initiatives.
"The third is 'FOLU Terra,' which aims to improve community welfare through environment-based activities," he added.
As of the fourth phase, the funding scheme had disbursed more than Rp29 billion (around US$1.6 million) to 863 community groups, benefiting 49,653 people across 36 provinces.
Norwegian Ambassador-Designate to Indonesia Kaja Glomm expressed her country's pride in its long-standing partnership with Indonesia on climate resilience and forest conservation.
She said that Norway had provided US$216 million in recognition of Indonesia's verified achievements in reducing emissions from deforestation and advancing its FOLU Net Sink 2030 agenda.
In the results-based contribution mechanism, Indonesia's Forestry Ministry is responsible for implementing FOLU decarbonization initiatives while coordinating with partners and empowering communities.
