West Ham get their Championship campaign under way against Burnley today. The Hammers are on the road at Turf Moor in a potentially tough opening to their first second-tier season for 14 years, with both sides aiming to bounce straight back to the Premier League. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side head to Lancashire with confidence as their transfer business finally picks up and after they toppled Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup last weekend.

Arne Engels was signed too late from Celtic to be considered for a swift debut this afternoon, while West Ham are without Tomas Soucek and Keiber Lamadrid due to injury. However, Nuno still has a very strong squad at his disposal including new arrivals Manor Solomon and Joel Veltman plus captain Jarrod Bowen, who is staying put for at least another year. New Burnley boss Nicky Hayen has few fresh fitness issues to contend with, though he is still missing a handful of long-term absentees including Jordan Beyer and Josh Cullen.

West Ham make statement with Arne Engels signing

After a slow start to the summer on incomings despite banking over £150m from the sales of Mateus Fernandes, Crysencio Summerville and Freddie Potts, West Ham are finally starting to flex their muscles in that regard with a couple of weeks left in the transfer window.

Joel Veltman’s experience could be crucial this season and Manor Solomon will relish the chance to impress after a frustrating spell at Tottenham, while Arne Engels is a real statement addition as the most expensive signing in the history of the Championship.

That record had been set earlier this summer by today’s opponents Burnley, who had an obligation to permanently sign loanee Florentino Luis from Benfica for £20.8m - before promptly selling him to promoted Ipswich for around £16m.

“It feels amazing to be here, so I'm delighted and I can't wait to get started,” said Engels, who has been given the No7 shirt by West Ham that was vacated by Summerville.

“It's a really nice project to come into and try to go back to the Premier League. That's the big goal.

“I think that's everybody's goal and it's just up to me to hopefully help the team with it and together with the supporters to get some wins.”

Who misses out for Burnley?

And here’s the latest Burnley team news update from Nuno Espirito Santo’s opposite number, former Club Brugge and Genk boss Nicky Hayen.

“Just a few players,” the Belgian remarked when quizzed on who would miss out against West Ham at his own pre-match press conference.

“Josh Cullen is, of course, out. Enock [Agyei] is out. Etienne Green is out. Ashley Barnes as well, these are the only ones who are out.”

On forwards Lyle Foster and Michael Obafemi, he added: “They're both fit, so we try to get them as fit as possible for the squad.”

Nuno delivers latest West Ham injury update

Here’s what West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo had to say about the injuries to Tomas Soucek and Keiber Lamadrid at Friday’s pre-match press conference, as he also hinted at other unnamed players struggling to be fit for the start of the Championship campaign.

“Both of them are out for this game. We hope to have both of them back as soon as possible,” he said.

“Both of them are improving, and we’ll continue to assess them day by day. As a squad, we are preparing.

“We still have one session to go, and we are dealing with a couple of other issues, so after that we will decide the team.”

Burnley vs West Ham prediction

Both Burnley and West Ham will have hoped for gentler assignments on their respective returns to the Championship than this.

There is pressure on each club to get back into the Premier League at the first time of asking this season and Nicky Hayen and Nuno Espirito Santo will be eager to produce a real statement of intent at the earliest opportunity.

West Ham endured something of a slow start to the summer both in terms of pre-season results and their incoming transfer business, though they are picking up pace on both fronts after coming from behind to defeat second-tier rivals Portsmouth 3-1 at home in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

Burnley, meanwhile, flattered to deceive at home to Notts County - who were three divisions below them last season - needing Zian Flemming’s equaliser and a decisive shootout penalty from Kyle Walker to spare their blushes in Hayen’s first competitive match in charge as the permanent successor to Scott Parker.

We expect a tight and cagey opening day affair here that will end all square.

Arne Engels yesterday completed his move from Celtic to West Ham that broke the record for the most expensive signing in Championship history at potentially £25m, but the Belgian midfielder won’t be available for his own swift debut at Turf Moor today.

Fellow new recruits Manor Solomon and Joel Veltman are available, though Nuno Espirito Santo is missing experienced midfielder Tomas Soucek as he works his way back from an ankle ligament injury suffered at the World Cup with the Czech Republic earlier this summer.

Also out for West Ham today is Keiber Lamadrid, who sustained a knee issue in the pre-season friendly clash with FC Magdeburg in Germany a fortnight ago.

The problem was expected to keep him out for around three weeks, with Lamadrid now a full-time Hammers player after his loan from Deportivo La Guaira in Venezuela was converted into a permanent transfer for a fee of £1m.

New Clarets boss Nicky Hayen is not believed to be dealing with any fresh injury concerns after needing a penalty shootout to avoid a Carabao Cup first-round shock at home to third-tier new boys Notts County last weekend.

Jordan Beyer, Josh Cullen, Enock Agyei and Jaydon Banel are all still out, while Ashley Barnes is not fit enough to be involved yet after returning to the club last month on a one-year deal.

Lyle Foster and Michael Obafemi could both return after missing the Notts County game, but Armando Broja is unlikely to play once more.
