Jensen Ackles Pitches Supernatural Revival Story

Supernatural gets the perfect revival setup from one of its main stars.

Supernatural recently celebrated its 21st anniversary, as the fan-favorite dark fantasy series debuted on September 13, 2005. While the series has been off the air since 2020, that has not stopped fans from asking the show's stars to make Supernatural season 16 happen or a revival of the show on streaming. Over the years, multiple key players in the dark fantasy series have commented on how they would be game to return for a Supernatural revival, such as Sam Winchester actor Jared Padalecki and Cas star Misha Collins. Now, an intriguing idea for Supernatural's return comes from the trio's final member.

At Creation Charlotte 2026 (via @FangasmSPN/X), Dean Winchester actor Jensen Ackles shared his idea for what could set up a Supernatural revival.

According to the star, he would have tweaked Supernatural's ending to feature Jack (Alexander Calvert) arriving to tell Sam and Dean in the afterlife that they had to be sent back, with the show then cutting to black. According to Ackles, that would have been all that is needed to keep the door slightly open for something in the future, like a Supernatural revival. While that did not happen, Ackles noted that they could always film a new scene with Calvert as Jack arriving during Sam and Dean's moment at the bridge in the Supernatural series finale to the same effect. "I would have liked to have Jack come through the front door and just walk up to Sam and Dean and just be like, “I need to send you guys back'... Which just opens the door to something in the future."

The Supernatural series finale was an emotional, albeit controversial, ending to the hit series. Ackles' Dean died in a routine hunt that he would not have even broken a sweat if it was not meant to be the final episode of the long-running series, which drew criticism from fans of the show. After Dean's death, Padalecki's Sam went on to live a long and normal life. When he eventually died as an old man, Sam arrived in the Heaven that Jack had remade, where Dean was waiting for him at a bridge he drove to in the brothers' classic Impala.

That reunion was a poignant moment to end the series, and it is that very scene Ackles claimed could be reworked with the inclusion of Jack in new footage to set up a Supernatural revival in the future. It would make sense within the show, as Jack became the new God, stripping Chuck of his powers, in Supernatural's final season. As such, he has the power to bring Sam and Dean back to life. In addition to that, Jack also believes in not interfering with humans' lives like Chuck did.

As such, if he were to see a great evil rising, putting Sam and Dean on the case would likely be Jack's go-to move, rather than directly interfering with humans' affairs. For now, there are no concrete updates on Supernatural season 16 or another type of revival for the hit series. Ackles remains with a packed schedule, with The Boys spinoff Vought Rising set to be released in 2027, new episodes of Tracker as Russel Shaw on the way, and the recently announced Rules of Prey crime thriller series for MGM+. That said, Ackles is giving ideas for a Supernatural revival, so he should be happy to come back.
