Sadiq’s return delights Aguirre after Valencia win

Translate

Valencia coach Javier Aguirre has described Super Eagles striker Umar Sadiq’s return from injury as “great news for everybody” after the Nigerian scored the winner in their 1-0 victory over Elche on Sunday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Sadiq came off the bench at the Manuel Martínez Valero to mark his return with a decisive contribution, finishing off a counter-attacking move involving Javi Guerra and Arnaut Danjuma.

After receiving the ball from Danjuma, the 29-year-old showed composure to cut inside his marker before slotting home with his left foot to secure all three points for Valencia.

Beyond the goal, Sadiq also provided an attacking outlet, using his physical presence to hold up the ball, bring teammates into play and help Valencia progress up the pitch.

Reacting after the match, Aguirre expressed satisfaction with the victory but lamented his side’s inability to extend their advantage despite creating further opportunities.

“We also had the chance to make it 0-2, and I don’t know what happened in that move. Elche CF had their chances too. The win feels good,” he said.

Sadiq’s return followed an injury-enforced absence that saw him miss Valencia’s previous seven league matches against Barcelona, Sevilla, Alavés, Real Sociedad, Racing Santander, Athletic Club and Villarreal.

Despite his fitness problems, the Nigerian has scored twice in four appearances for Valencia this season and will hope to remain fit and build on his impressive comeback.
