No one can deny that the superhero genre isn’t what it used to be. The 2010s delivered some of the most renowned productions of the genre, but ever since 2019's Avengers: Endgame, it hasn’t been the same. From low-quality TV shows to inconsistent theatrical releases, many thought it was the end for superheroes in the early 2020s. However, the past few years have been a return to form for both Marvel and DC.
Superman was a great success to kick off the DCU, and the MCU finally found its stride again, especially after Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, the best is yet to come, which is why this list will feature the eight most anticipated superhero movies based on hype. Aspects such as fan opinion, release date, trailers, info, potential, and overall excitement will also be considered, meaning these eight movies are on every nerd's watchlist for the next few years. Only movies with confirmed release windows will be featured.
8 ‘Black Panther 3’ (2028)
After the next couple of MCU movies, the franchise will enter a new saga with plenty of unknowns, but fans at least know what movies are to come, such as Black Panther 3. The first Black Panther is among the best MCU movies, and the second one had its strengths, but this third movie is going to round out the trilogy starring a new titular character, the son of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman).
It is wild to think that Black Panther 3 is last on this list in terms of hype, but that just goes to show how many anticipated movies are coming up. Ryan Coogler is returning to direct, and after his Oscar success, fans are more excited than ever. Black Panther 3 does come out in 2028, which is some time away, and that's the main reason it places last. There is barely any information to get hyped about besides the incredible casting of David Jonsson, but considering it is the final film of the trilogy, everyone is expecting something good.
7 ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ (2027)
2027 is going to be a quiet year for the superhero genre, with both the MCU and DCU only releasing one movie each; for the former, it is Avengers: Secret Wars. Not much is known about this upcoming Avengers movie besides that it should be coming out in 2027 and will be a sequel of sorts to the 2026 film. Fans can make an educated guess based on the title, assuming it will loosely follow the plot of the comic of the same name.
Fans might be surprised this isn’t higher, but the truth is we know less about this film than other ones coming out in 2028. Some of the cast has been confirmed, and others are still rumors, but the big dampening aspect of the hype is the fact that it hasn’t begun production. Fans aren’t even sure if it will still come out in 2027, which is why it ranks a bit lower. Still, Secret Wars will be the biggest MCU event since Endgame, meaning everyone will be seated for whatever is in store for them, especially if it brings back plenty of fan-favorite heroes.
6 ‘Ghost Rider’ (2028)
Marvel had a big blowout event where they announced all of their 2028 movies, like Black Panther 3, and the unexpected reveal of Ghost Rider. As the other films were announced, no plot details were showcased, but what fans do know is that Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool & Wolverine, will be helming this project and that Ryan Gosling will star as the titular hero. Before this one comes out, fans can see what the duo is capable of in next year's Star Wars: Starfighter.
New projects for MCU films are always more hyped than sequels, and the return of Ghost Rider is some of the biggest news yet. What gives this the edge over the other films is the casting, with everyone agreeing that Gosling is the perfect choice for this role, adding immensely to the hype. Levy is a solid choice as a director, but fans may want to reserve their hype until they see Starfighter. Regardless, simply having Ghost Rider in the MCU is one of the most hype things.
5 ‘The Batman Part II’ (2028)
This list has been all Marvel so far, mainly because DC only had two confirmed films, with the first on this list being The Batman Part II. Originally slated for 2026, it has been pushed back a few times, now sitting at an early 2028 release date. 2022's The Batman was a massive success and a modern classic, getting everyone excited for this next one if it ever comes out.
The Batman Part II has been on everyone’s mind since 2023, but the recent news about Matt Reeves has fans concerned for him and the film. Filming will resume with Steven Soderbergh, but fans can’t help being worried. While this sudden shift is cause for concern, there is still a lot to be hyped about, including the incredible casting of Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan, and the winter setting. Theories about the villain are running rampant, proving the hype is still there, with this being a potential $1 billion hit for DC.
4 ‘X-Men’ (2028)
That event announced a lot of good Marvel movies, and while Black Panther 3 and Ghost Rider are exciting, it can’t compete with the hype for X-Men. Directed by Jake Schreier, who gave us Thunderbolts*, the main story hasn’t been revealed, but the main cast has, from Sadie Sink to rising stars like Inde Navarrette, Kit Connor, Maya Boyd, and Asa German, plus established names like Samara Weaving, Christopher Abbott, and Adam Driver.
The cast is mixed with up-and-coming actors and established stars, creating a good balance. Plus, with such a young cast, they can continue this universe for decades. The perfect casting is enough to hype up fans, but the fact that Mister Sinister is making his live-action debut is even better. Every piece of news that has come out of this project is perfect, with 2028 not coming soon enough. Schreier also delivered a perfect MCU film and arguably the studio's best modern movie, proving he is the perfect candidate for X-Men.

Identity confirmedYour MCU hero is
Spider-Man Queens, New York Responsibility is not something you chose. It found you, and you never put it down.
You carry the weight of the world on shoulders younger than they should have to be: funny, loyal and endlessly self-sacrificing. You do the right thing not because it is easy but because nobody else will. Whether it is a mugging two streets over or a crisis across the multiverse, you show up. Great power demanding great responsibility is not a slogan to you. It is the code you live by, even when it costs you everything. Why this is you
- You show up for the small stuff nobody is watching.
- You joke through fear rather than letting it stop you.
- You take the loss personally, every time.
From the Collider file
- Tom Holland was introduced mid-fight in Civil War in 2016, with no origin story needed.
- No Way Home passed 1.9 billion dollars and became the biggest release of the pandemic era.
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrived in 2026, his fourth solo outing in the MCU.
Shows up Carries the guilt Jokes through it
Daredevil Hell's Kitchen, New York You looked into the dark and decided not to become it. That decision gets made again every night.
You fight in the space between law and chaos, steered by a moral compass that refuses to let the guilty walk. You use every tool you have, your mind, your body and your faith, to protect the people the system overlooks. You have come close to the edge and stepped back from it more than once. Matt Murdock's split, champion in the courtroom and devil in the alley, mirrors your own: relentless, conflicted and unwilling to stop. Why this is you
- You work the problem legally first and physically second.
- You hold a line you have genuinely wanted to cross.
- You take the cases nobody else will touch.
From the Collider file
- Charlie Cox's 2015 series opened with a one-take hallway fight that reset the bar for TV action.
- Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin crossed into Hawkeye and Echo before the two reunited on screen.
- Daredevil: Born Again brought the pair back, and a second season followed in 2026.
Fights the dark Keeps the faith Never stops
Iron Man Stark Industries, Malibu You started out protecting yourself. Somewhere along the way the world became your problem.
Brilliant, driven and occasionally insufferable, but always the person who solves the unsolvable problem. You lead with your mind and back it with resources, invention and a stubbornness that edges into heroism. You began looking out for yourself and ended up carrying everyone else. Tony Stark's arc from ego to sacrifice is your arc too. You build, you plan, and when the moment comes you are willing to give everything. Why this is you
- You solve it with the thing you built last night.
- You would rather be useful than liked.
- You have a contingency for the contingency.
From the Collider file
- The 2008 film launched the entire MCU on a casting choice the studio considered a real risk.
- Much of Robert Downey Jr.'s dialogue was improvised, the closing line included.
- Announcing himself at that press conference threw out the secret-identity rulebook for a decade of films.
Builds the answer Ego to sacrifice Always has a plan
The Punisher New York City What is left after the fire is not broken. It is narrowed down to one thing.
You went through something that would break most people, and it did change you, completely. What remains is unyielding and operates by a code forged in grief. You do not ask forgiveness and you do not expect thanks. You looked at a corrupt, broken world and decided to do something about it whatever it costs. Frank Castle's war comes out of love bent by loss, and so does yours. The world may never agree with your methods, but your conviction is absolute. Why this is you
- You finish what you start, with no appetite for ceremony.
- You keep your circle small and your mission smaller.
- You accept being the villain in somebody else's telling.
From the Collider file
- Jon Bernthal arrived in Daredevil's second season in 2016 and earned a two-season show of his own.
- The character was created in 1974 by Gerry Conway, John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru, as a Spider-Man antagonist.
- Bernthal returned in Born Again, with a Disney+ special following on from it.
Forged in grief No forgiveness asked Absolute
Thor Asgard, the Nine Realms Worthiness is not a thing you are given. It is a thing you keep earning.
Powerful, proud, and on a long journey toward being worthy of the legend you carry. You lead with strength, and you learned, sometimes painfully, that the real thing comes from humility and growth instead. You are larger than life and more vulnerable than you let on. Thor's story is a long transformation, from arrogant prince to worthy king, from isolated warrior to someone people genuinely love. You bring the storm when it is needed and the warmth when that matters more. Why this is you
- You go first, and loudly.
- You take the lesson, eventually.
- You are the morale of the room as much as its muscle.
From the Collider file
- Chris Hemsworth nearly missed the part. His brother Liam got further in the process at first.
- Taika Waititi's Ragnarok reinvented the character through heavy on-set improvisation.
- Hemsworth has headlined four Thor films, from 2011 through to 2022.
Brings the storm Still earning it Warmer than he looks
Captain America Brooklyn, New York Strength was never the point. Refusing to move was the point.
You believe in something bigger than yourself, and you fight for it even once the world has moved on and nobody else will. You do not bully the small guy and you do not stop when it gets hard. Steve Rogers did not become a hero when he got the serum. He already was one, and so are you. Your strength is not in your fists, it is in refusing to compromise what is right whatever that costs. In a world of people taking the easy road, you are the one who stands back up. Why this is you
- You say the unpopular thing in the room where it costs you.
- You hold the plan together when it starts coming apart.
- You get back up. That is the whole trick.
From the Collider file
- Chris Evans turned the role down more than once before finally taking it.
- The Winter Soldier recast the series as a political thriller and is still held up as its best.
- Anthony Mackie took over the shield and led Brave New World in 2025.
Holds the line Stands back up No compromise

3 ‘Man of Tomorrow’ (2027)
After a polarizing, yet overall good 2026, DCU is taking a step back in 2027, but that just puts more spotlight on Man of Tomorrow. It isn’t a Superman sequel per se, but rather a team-up with him and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) to take down Brainiac (Lars Eidinger). While fans know the main villain and most of the supporting cast, the actual story is yet to be revealed, but fans are excited anyway.
A lot is riding on Man of Tomorrow, making it less so anticipated and more so nervously awaited. It could determine the fate of the DCU, and those stakes have added a whole new layer of hype. The addition of Brainiac has been a long time coming, instantly hyping up this film, and the cast of heroes truly makes this an event movie that is bound to be riveting. Some say there are too many characters, but this is just James Gunn’s style, and the fact that it is the next major project in the DCU gives weight to the hype.
2 ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ (2027)
Even though there are only three superhero movies coming out in 2027, they have potential to be the best, but the greatest is arguably Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The first movie is regarded as one of the best animated films of all time, and the second one is just as good, ending on a cliffhanger. The Spot (Jason Schwartzman) is still on a rampage, and the rest of the gang is looking for Miles (Shameik Moore), who is in an alternate world and has come face to face with himself.
Beyond the Spider-Verse has the potential to make this Spidey saga the greatest superhero trilogy of all time, maybe even the best trilogy, full stop. The animation is proven to be jaw-droppingly gorgeous, showcasing detailed art and unique flavor to be renowned as world-class. The story is getting better as well, with the cliffhanger adding even more hype to what will happen in this movie. The potential, proven success, and legacy that is at stake have made Beyond the Spider-Verse the must-watch movie of 2027.
1 ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ (2026)
Almost all the movies on this list are slated for 2027 or 2028, but there is still one unreleased 2026 film, and it is easily the most anticipated superhero movie. Avengers: Doomsday is just over a month away, and it is setting up to be the biggest MCU movie ever. Robert Downey Jr. returns as a new character, the villainous Dr. Doom, who will push the combined efforts of the Avengers, Thunderbolts, and Fantastic Four to the limits.
As the most recent movie coming out, Avengers: Doomsday is obviously the most hyped superhero film. But that isn’t the only reason. The success of Brand New Day has elevated the excitement, with the film now primed to break records. From returning heroes like Cyclops (James Marsden) to established icons such as Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Doomsday is going to be a cinematic event that pits childhood legends against each other, with many fates up in the air. The sudden and tragic passing of Sir Patrick Stewart has also got fans hyped for Doomsday, as it will be his last film, making it a bittersweet note to end on.
