KOTA BHARU, Oct 14 — Domestic violence does not only involve husbands abusing their wives, but can also involve wives or other family members abusing husbands, said Kelantan Social Welfare Department (JKM) director Che Samsuzuki Che Noh.

He said the issue must be taken seriously as violence within the family could result in serious injuries, death or other criminal acts if left unchecked.

“Sometimes, individuals facing stress may seek an outlet to relieve it, but this should not be done by resorting to violence against their partners or family members,” he told reporters after the opening ceremony of the 2026 Kelantan State JKM Temporary Evacuation Centre Management Training and Simulation Exercise here yesterday.

Che Samsuzuki said 32 domestic violence cases had been recorded in Kelantan so far this year, including the latest incident involving a woman who was seriously injured after being stabbed by her husband in Kampung Padang Lepai, Kadok, on October 5.

In this regard, he said JKM would continue working with the Kelantan State Women’s Development Office, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and relevant agencies to raise public awareness of domestic violence and the assistance available to victims.

Victims of abuse are urged to seek help from JKM or the Women’s Development Office, as well as lodge a police report and undergo a medical examination if they have sustained injuries, he said.

“Do not remain silent or regard it merely as a family matter. Victims need to seek help so that appropriate action can be taken and their safety ensured,” he said. — Bernama
