Fernández Reaches Verbal Agreement With Man City

Argentina international Enzo Fernández has reached a verbal agreement on personal terms with Manchester City.

This is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano (via Business Upturn).

The Argentina international’s potential move from Chelsea now hinges entirely on club-to-club negotiations, with no official bid submitted yet by the Premier League champions.

Contacts between the two clubs are expected soon, and the final decision on the transfer fee rests with Chelsea. Fernández could also miss Chelsea’s Premier League fixture this weekend.

Romano reported on 29 August 2026 that Fernández and Manchester City have aligned on personal terms. The deal remains incomplete because City have yet to lodge a formal offer.

Once club-level talks begin, Chelsea will decide the price. The midfielder’s availability for the weekend is also in doubt.

This development comes late in the summer transfer window, keeping the long-running saga alive just days before the deadline.

Chelsea signed Fernández from Benfica in 2023 for a then-British record fee. He has since established himself as a key midfielder and was even named vice-captain.

Interest from Manchester City intensified this summer under manager Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with the player at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea set a self-imposed deadline in mid-August requiring a bid of around £120 million. That deadline passed without an offer, and the club indicated at the time that Fernández was expected to stay.

Interest from City never fully disappeared, however, and reports in late August confirmed ongoing contact with the player’s representatives.

Fernández has been linked with a move away for much of the year amid frustration over Chelsea’s lack of Champions League football and earlier public comments about his future. Real Madrid interest faded earlier in the summer, leaving City as the primary suitor.

For Manchester City, Fernández would strengthen a midfield that has undergone significant change following high-profile departures. Reuniting with Maresca is seen as a major draw for the 25-year-old, who still has a long-term contract at Chelsea running until 2032.

Chelsea’s position remains firm: they will only sell if the fee is right and if they can adequately replace him before the window closes. The Blues have already invested heavily in the squad this summer and appear prepared either to keep Fernández or use the proceeds to strengthen further.

The absence of an official bid means nothing is confirmed. Price talks will determine whether the verbal personal agreement progresses into a completed transfer.
