Stranger Things confirms live-action prequel series with plot details revealed

Translate

Netflix has announced plans for a live-action Stranger Things spin-off, titled Other Worlds, which will serve as a prequel to the original hit series.

Stranger Things, of course, is no stranger to spin-offs. The massive Netflix show has already spawned animated adventures, video games and even a West End stage production.

And now, with the dust having settled on the flagship show's now-completed run, Netflix has seen fit to press the big red button marked 'live-action prequel show'. And hey, why not? It worked for Game of Thrones!

Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure was revealed through Netflix's official channels using the teaser trailer below. Take a look for yourself.

"Before Hawkins, there was Marion," the description of the YouTube video notes.

The trailer itself confirms that the setting for the series is Marion, Nevada, and that it kicks off in 1955. That places it some three decades before the main events of Stranger Things, the first season of which was set in 1983.

Other Worlds also predates the events of The First Shadow play, the main plot of which was set in 1959. Exactly what the threat will be, and what those 'other worlds' actually are, remains to be seen.

Not giving much away, the trailer shows an establishing shot of Marion from a great distance. A flash of ominous lightning cracks in the sky, before the trailer cuts to the title card.

Said card confirms the title - Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure - which does have a certain 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' ring to it.

The trailer also confirms that Other Worlds is aiming for a 2028 release, meaning that we would expect to see casting and production news fairly soon.

Netflix's official blog, Tudum, confirms that the Duffer Brothers - showrunners of the original Stranger Things - are returning to steer this ship as executive producers.

“We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating,” said Matt and Ross Duffer in an official quote.

“It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains, and new … actually, we’re not allowed to say any more. Now, on to casting. In the meantime — watch the skies, nerds!”

The showrunner this time will be Kate Trefry, who worked with the Duffers on the original series and the stage production, The First Shadow.

“The Duffer Brothers gave me my first paying job in Hollywood, and it has been a joy and a fever dream ever since,” said Trefry of the news.

“Now, it is my insane honor and privilege to be bringing this new chapter of Stranger Things to life alongside them and our incredible director, Joe Wright.

“With the support of Netflix and 21 Laps, we have had the time of our lives returning to all the horror, wonder and mystery of the flagship, while also telling a wholly new story, one we hope will blow your minds and break your hearts all over again. There are so many more mysteries to explore. Welcome to Other Worlds.”
