Soup sold at Tesco and Waitrose recalled over fears tins could burst: 'Do not eat'

Anyone who has purchased cans of a fish soup has been urged to dispose of them in outside bins over fears the tins could burst.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued an alert on Friday on behalf of Baxters who have recalled their Chef Selections Cullen Skink soup, a smoked haddock chowder, due to a manufacturing fault which may cause the product to spoil and cans to “swell and potentially rupture”.

The Scottish soup company said the issue may affect 400g cans with batch code L07XC and an April 2029 best before date.

The FSA told customers who had purchased the product in England and Wales: “do not eat it”.

If it is spoiled, the soup may have an “unpleasant odour and flavour”.

“Instead, dispose of the full can and product without opening. Carefully place the full can in a bag and dispose of it in an external bin.”

People seeking a replacement are told to contact Baxters customer care team on 0800 389 8389 or e-mail CCUK@baxters.com.

Point-of-sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that have sold the product to explain why it is being recalled. This includes Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.

Tesco issued its own warning to customers, writing: "If you’ve bought an affected product, please don’t eat it. Instead, return it to any Tesco store for a full refund. No receipt is required.”

Earlier this week, the FSA issued an allergy alert over several batches of Rubicon Yuzu & Pink Grapefruit juice due to undeclared allergens.

An official safety notice read: “AG Barr is initiating a precautionary recall of specific batches of Rubicon Yuzu & Pink Grapefruit Still 1L (Tetra Carton) due to the potential presence of undeclared sulphites, making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites.”

Products affected will have the following batch codes:

  • 6160 (best before June 2027)
  • 6198 (best before July 2027)
  • 6219 (best before August 2027)
  • 6257 (best before September 2027)

While no other product is affected, these batches may contain sulphites, which pose a possible health risk to anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites.
