Severe thunderstorms threaten parts of North West and Free State

Translate

Residents in parts of North West and the Free State should prepare for severe thunderstorms as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a yellow level 2 warning for Saturday and Sunday.

The warning, which took effect at 1pm on Saturday, will remain in place until 9.59pm on Sunday.

SAWS expects severe storms to develop over the eastern parts of both provinces during this period.

The storms could bring excessive lightning, heavy downpours, damaging winds and large amounts of small hail.

Heavy rain and strong winds could cause damage

The thunderstorms could bring enough rain to cause localised flooding, particularly along roads and bridges that are vulnerable to flooding.

Strong winds could also bring down trees and block smaller roads, while severe weather could temporarily disrupt electricity supplies and communication services.

The weather service cautioned that these conditions could cause localised damage to infrastructure, homes, vehicles and people’s livelihoods.

SAWS also warned that informal settlements could experience localised damage during the storms.

Severe thunderstorms: What residents should watch out for

Residents in the affected areas should remain alert as thunderstorms develop over the weekend.

Heavy downpours could make driving conditions dangerous, while hail and strong winds could damage vehicles and property.

Motorists should take extra care on roads, avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges.

Have you experienced severe thunderstorms, heavy rain or hail in your area this weekend?
