Helen Mirren's "marvellous" British comedy starring Danny Dyer has just landed on Netflix today. Loosely based on a true story of six prisoners winning a Royal Horticultural Society gold award at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2000, Greenfingers (2000) is about two prisoners, Colin Briggs and Fergus Wilks, cultivating a garden while at prison.

Noticing their green thumbs, Briggs and Wilks attract the attention of gardening expert Georgina Woodhouse (Mirren), who offers to sponsor them at the Hampton Court Flower Show.

But flowers aren't the only thing blooming at the show as Briggs takes a liking to Woodhouse's daughter Primrose.

Alongside Mirren, the ensemble cast includes Clive Owen as Briggs, David Kelly as Wilks, Warren Clark as Gov. Hodge, Dyer as Tony and Natasha Little as Primrose. Meanwhile, Hold Me, Kiss Me, Thrill Me's Joel Hershman both directed and wrote the film.

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the comedy drama received a critical score of 48%, while audiences rated it a bit higher at 66%.

Reviews on IMDb were incredibly positive, too. One person called it "a great Sunday evening movie", adding: "This is a great little film."

"'Greenfingers' is a marvelous and splendid little film," another said. "Writer and director Joel Hershman shows brilliant understanding of the British culture and the fascination towards gardening as it is superbly depicted in the film."

Meanwhile, a third had nothing but praise for the performances, writing: "A very well done movie, with everybody turning in a fine performance. Clive Owen was quite good, but David Kelly is simply marvelous."

However, some critics were also won over by the film's charm, as the San Francisco Chronicle wrote: "Succeeds in capturing the movement of a soul from hopelessness to humanity."

The San Diego Union-Tribune said: "The movie gives some blooming satisfaction," while Observer wrote: "An exemplary movie that makes you feel good about the human condition."

Greenfingers is available to watch on Netflix UK/Ireland.
